Akutagawa Ryunosuke Akutagawa Ryunosuke was born in 1892. His mother became crazy nine months after his birth and as a result he was sent to live with his grand parents. Akutagawa lost his fathers family name after a while and inherited his mother's maiden name, on account of him living with his mother's parents.
Akutagawa was always paranoid as a child, that like his mother he would eventually become crazy. On this note, it would seem that most of his writing seems to reflect this sad mind set. Most of his writing revolves around the sad and dark nature of humanity, reflecting his personal opinion about the depressing nature of human kind. Ryunosuke devoted his whole life to the purpose of writing. He had spent most of his high school years with writing and continued doing so as he entered Tokyo University. After graduating from Tokyo University, Akutagawa joined a writing club and wrote many creative journals. It was around this time that Akutagawa met Natsume Souseki. Souseki was himself a professor at Tokyo University, and took a liking to the writing style of young Akutagawa. He began promoting Akutagawa's work, and helped to create the exposure that Akutagawa needed to succeed. Akutagawa Ryunosuke then began working for the Asahi newspaper company as a columnist. His title was "friend of the newspaper".

Published in Aim , Spring 1999 JAPAN'S EDGAR ALLAN POE If you like Edgar Allan Poe's short stories, you'll probably also enjoy those of Akutagawa Ryunosuke. As many of us consider Poe (1809-1849) our greatest short story writer, in Japan many consider Akutagawa (1892-1927) theirs. And he has a remarkable number of other things in common with Poe. In spite of what might first appear to be polar differences, even their lives were similar. Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809, and died in Baltimore, on October 7, 1849, so lived only forty yearsa short and troubled life. His parents were traveling actors, but both died before Poe was three. He was then adopted by the John Allans, who lived in England through his grade-school years. But in his teens he became alienated from his adoptive father, and was finally disinherited by him. It also seemed that, not only his mother and foster mother, but all the women closest to Poe died lingering deaths of tuberculosis. When his young wife slowly coughed out her life in his arms, it left him devastated. Struggling with such problems, Poe began to drink, and, more than once, attempted suicide. In somewhat mysterious circumstances, he was found ill and delirious on the streets of Baltimore and taken to the hospital where he diedat forty. Akutagawa Ryunosuke was born in Tokyo on March 1, 1892, so 83 years after Poeat the other end of the 19th century and in Japan, at the other end of the world. But it was a Japan that was rapidly becoming westernized, which included an increased reading interest in western writers. He, too, was adopted, because his parents were older people, and his mother was committed to a mental institution shortly after he was born. He was taken into the home of, and later adopted by, his mother's brother. He grew up suffering much the same kind of family rejection Poe had suffered. Moreover, given his mother's condition, he was always fearful about his own sanity. Finally, after several failed attempts, Akutagawa did, in fact, commit suicide, July 24, 1927, when he was only thirty-five. So he lived an even shorter, and perhaps even more tormented, life than Poe did.

A paper which discusses the life and works of Japanese author, Akutagawa Ryunosuke within the modernist period that he lived. Written in 2002; 2,470 words; 3 sources; APA; Paper Summary: The paper explores the life and literary pieces of Japanese writer and poet, Akutogawa Ryunosuke who was one of the first writers of the Japanese modernist movement to be translated widely into English. The paper shows that Akutagawa is probably best known for his single short story "Rashomon", which inspired director Akira Kurosawa's film of that name in 1950. In order to understand the times in which Akutogawa lived and worked, the paper defines modernism and explains the difference between Japanese and Western modernism. From the Paper: "The stories that Akutagawa wrote and that Kurosawa adapted were in fact based on stories that had probably been compiled in the 10th century. Akutagawa would over the course of his short professional life adopt many ancient Japanese stories, seeming to prefer tales that were both Gothic and based on pre-modern elements. His settings, as grotesque and bizarre as any that Edgar Allan Poe could ever have dreamed up, would have struck his readers as standing in obvious contrast the to "civilized" state of Western-influenced 20th-century Japan."

edit Early life
Akutagawa was born in the Kyōbashi district of Tokyo , the son of a milkman (Toshizō Shinbara Shinbara Toshizō ). He later claimed that he was named "Ryūnosuke" ("Dragon Son") because he was born in the Year of the Dragon , in the Month of the Dragon, on the Day of the Dragon, and at the Hour of the Dragon, although an examination of the calendar indicates that this was not actually the case attribution needed . His mother (Fuku Shinbara) went insane shortly after his birth, so he was adopted and raised by his maternal uncle, Akutagawa Dosho, from whom he received the Akutagawa family name. He was interested in classical Chinese literature from an early age, as well as the works of
