Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1892-1927) Short-story writer, poet, and essayist, one of the first Japanese modernists translated into English. Akutagawa published no full-length novel. He was a stylistic perfectionist, who often favored macabre themes. His short stories 'In a Grove' and 'Rashomon' inspired Akira Kurosawa 's classic film from 1950. In 1935, the writer's friend Kikuchi Kan established the Akutagawa Prize, which is generally considered among the most prestigious Japanese literary awards for aspiring writers. "Yes, sir. Certainly, it was I who found the body. This morning, as usual, I went to cut my daily quota of cedars, when I found the body in a grove in a hollow in the mountains. The exact location? About 150 meters off the Yamashina stage road. It's an out-of-the-way grove of bamboo and cedars." (from Rashomon and Other Stories , trans. by M. Kuwata, Takashi Kojima)

Akutagawa was born in the Kyōbashi district Tokyo as the eldest son of a dairy operator named Shinbara Toshizō and his wife Fuku. He was named "Ryūnosuke" ("Dragon Offshoot") because he was born in the Year of the Dragon, in the Month of the Dragon, on the Day of the Dragon, and at the Hour of the At school Akutagawa was an outstanding student, excelling in the Chinese classics. He entered the First High School in 1910, striking up relationships with such classmates as Kikuchi Kan, Kume Masao, Yamamoto Yūzō, and Tsuchiya Bunmei. Immersing himself in Western literature, he increasingly came to look for meaning in art rather than in life. In 1913, he entered Tokyo Imperial University, majoring in English literature. The next year, Akutagawa and his former high school friends revived the journal Shinshichō (New Currents of Thought), publishing translations of William Butler Yeats and Anatole France along with original works of their own. Akutagawa published the story

Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1892-1927)

(Born Niihara Ryunosuke) Japanese short story writer, novelist, poet, translator, and critic.
    INTRODUCTION
Akutagawa is considered one of the foremost writers of Japan's modern era, a period that began in 1868 under the rule of the Emperor Meiji. His works, particularly his short stories, contributed greatly to his generation's thoughtful consideration of such issues as the function and merits of different literary genres and the artist's role in contemporary Japanese society. They also proved instrumental in extricating Japanese literature from what critics consider the morass of gossip and tedious didacticism into which it had fallen before the Meiji Restoration.

Tobako tu akuma Tobacco and the Devil ), featured stories set in medieval Japan and drew heavily on Asian legends in form and theme. “Kumo no Ito” (“The Spider's Thread”) deals allegorically with one man's pervasive egoism, a flaw that proves fatal both to himself and to others. While Akutagawa's subjects constitute faithful representations of both the grim and the foolish aspects of human behavior, they are not always devoid of humor. “Hana” (“The Nose”), one of Akutagawa's best-known stories, addresses egoism by relating the predicament of a Buddhist monk who has succeeded in shortening his enormous nose, the bane of his existence and, as he sees it, the impediment to his social acceptance, but his vanity is penalized by disfigurement of his face and coldness from his peers.

        ONE
After a time, the Buddha paused at the edge of the pond and from between the lotus leaves that covered it saw a glimpse of the state of things below. Now this celestial pond just happened to lie directly over Hell, and peering through that crystal-clear water was like looking through a magnifying glass at the River of Death and the Mountain of Needles and such.
        TWO
Kandata was floating and sinking along with the other sinners in the Lake of Blood at the bottom of Hell. It was pitch black no matter which way he looked, and the occasional glimpse of light that he would see in the darkness would turn out to be just the glint of the terrible Mountain of Needles. How lonely he must have felt! All about him was the silence of the grave, the only occasional sound being a faint sigh from one of the damned. Those who were so evil as to be sent to this place were tired by its various torments, and left without even the strength to cry out. Even the great thief Kandata could only squirm like a dying frog as he choked in the Lake of Blood.
Though the thread had been fine until just then, with these words it snapped with a twang right where Kandata held it. Poor Kandata fell headfirst through the air, spinning like a top, right down through the darkness. The severed end of the silver thread hung there, suspended from heaven, shining with its pale light in that moonless, starless sky.

Categories This Question Is Answered: digg_skin = 'compact'; digg_window = 'new'; Who was Akutagawa Ryunosuke? 31 Mar 2007 13:42 Report Akutagawa Ryunosuke was a writer in the Taisho period of Japan. His work was first noticed by Natsume Soseki, whilst he was still a student, and he used this encouragement to lead himself on a successful career path as a writer. He self published his first story, and then had a succession of stories published under the guidance of Soseki.
Akutagawa Ryunosuke is considered to be a master of short stories. He rewrote classical ideas from a modern viewpoint, highlighting the folly of vanity and egoism. He promoted the importance and quality of art throughout his works, whilst exploring the darker side of human nature in great detail.
His works were always innovative, and he delighted in debates with other authors of the time, attacking their approach and penchant to follow the norm. His later works became darker and more intense as he suffered from mental health problems, littered with suicide attempts that culminated in an successful attempt aged 35.
Although Akutagawa Ryunosuke did not write a single novel, he wrote an astounding number of short stories in his brief lifetime. He did not fully receive the recognition that he deserved until after his death, when the Akutagawa prize was established in 1935 in his memory. Akira Kurosawa also completed cinematic versions of his stories.

A Japanese writer active in Taisho period Japan. He is regarded as the "Father of the Japanese short story", and is noted for his superb style and finely detailed stories that explore the darker side of human nature.

In 1914, Akutagawa and his former high school friends revived the literary journal Shinshichō ("New Currents of Thought"), publishing translations of William Butler Yeats and Anatole France along with their own works. Akutagawa published his first short story Rashōmon the following year in the literary magazine Teikoku Bungaku ("Imperial Literature"), while still a student. The story, based on a fantasy from late Heian period Japan, with a sharp twist of psychological drama, was largely unnoticed by the literary world, except by noted author Natsume Sōseki.

The most obvious example of kappa in Japanese literature is the story "Kappa," written by Akutagawa Ryunosuke in 1927, the same year in which he took a dose of veranol and thus his life. "Kappa" is narrated by Patient 23, an institutionalized man who tells the story of his journey to the land of kappa, his adventures there, and a brief glimpse into what happens after his return. The story is a thinly veiled satire about Japanese society in the 1920's and covers topics such as marriage, socialism, labor shortage and censorship in a fantasic, amusing world. It was also an avenue for Akutagawa to explore his mental state.
These kappa have a society of their own, very similar to that of the Japanese. They have theatres, artists, historians, capitalists, and wars with the otters, and they have a love of new inventions. They even wear glasses and have their own language, although they understand and speak Japanese as well. Much like in the myths, the kappa in this land are benevolent teachers and always trustworthy, but a subtle disturbing quality still hangs about them. Perhaps Akutagawa chose the kappa as his subject because they have a dangerous like the society he was commenting on.
