The English Philosophical Poem: Neoclassicism to Romanticism
T 103, 515-4163
Course Description
Between 1680 and 1820 some of the finest examples of English verse by Dryden, Pope, Wordsworth, Shelley and others together constitute a challenge to traditional boundaries between the Neoclassical and Romantic literary periods, and between the disciplines of literature and philosophy. Throughout this period poets felt authorized and often compelled to combine metaphysical, ethical, and epistemological issues into a form known as the philosophical poem. By reading a range of better and lesser known works from this period, the class will focus on the characteristics of this form of poetry and whether the philosophical poem constitutes a genre. We will consider what the philosophical poem's formal verse features were , what cultural circumstances made this kind of poem possible, how and why it changed, and what happened to it.
Goals:
  • -to introduce you to a tradition in which poetry was considered essential to critical thinking about one's self and the world.

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Mark Akenside Biography Mark Akenside (November 9, 1721 - June 23, 1770), was an English poet and physician.
Akenside was born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the son of a butcher; he was slightly lame all his life from a wound he received as a child from his father's cleaver. All his relations were dissenters, and, after attending the free school of Newcastle, and a dissenting academy in the town, he was sent (1739) to Edinburgh to study theology with a view to becoming a minister, his expenses being paid from a special fund set aside by the dissenting community for the education of their pastors. He had already contributed The Virtuoso, in imitation of Spenser's style and stanza (1737) to the Gentleman's Magazine, and in 1738 A British Philippic, occasioned by the Insults of the Spaniards, and the present Preparations for War (also published separately).
After one winter as a theology student, he changed to medicine. He repaid the money that had been advanced for his theological studies, and became a deist. His politics, said Dr Johnson, were characterized by an "impetuous eagerness to subvert and confound, with very little care what shall be established," and he is caricatured in the republican doctor of Tobias Smollett's Peregrine Pickle. He was elected a member of the Medical Society of Edinburgh in 1740. His ambitions already lay outside his profession, and his gifts as a speaker made him hope one day to enter parliament. In 1740 he printed his "Ode on the Winter Solstice" in a small volume of poems. In 1741 he left Edinburgh for Newcastle and began to call himself surgeon, though it is doubtful whether he practised, and from the next year dates his life-long friendship with Jeremiah Dyson (1722-1776).

Akenside is best remembered today for his long instructive poem, “The Pleasures of Imagination” (1744), and for his Odes on Several Subjects (1745). After studying in Edinburgh and in Leiden, Netherlands, where he received his medical degree in 1744, Akenside became a physician in London. He seems never to have had a large practice, although he devoted most of his attention to medicine. When George III came to the throne, Akenside became physician to Charlotte, his queen. He published several medical works and received a number of professional honours. In 1746 and 1747 he edited a literary magazine

    Poetical Works of Akenside by Mark Akenside page of 401 ( THE POETICAL WORKS OF MARK AKENSIDE. REV. GEORGE GILFILLAN. THE LIFE OF AKENSIDE. Mark Akenside was born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the 9th of November 1721. His family were Presbyterian Dissenters, and on the 30th of that month he was baptized in the meeting, then held in Hanover Square, by a Mr. Benjamin Bennet. His father, Mark, was a butcher in respectable circumstanceshis mother's name was Mary Lumsden. There may seem something grotesque in finding the author of the "Pleasures of Imagination" born in a place usually thought so anti-poetical as a butcher's shop. And yet similar anomalies abound in the histories of men of genius. Henry Kirke White, too, was a butcher's son, and for some time carried his father's basket. The late Thomas Atkinson, the Scotch call a "flesher's" son. The case of Cardinal Wolsey is well known. Indeed, we do not understand why any decent calling should be inimical to the existencehowever it may be to the google_ad_client = "pub-1317734135448640"; google_ad_width = 120; google_ad_height = 600; google_ad_format = "120x600_as"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_ad_channel = "3399807136"; google_color_border = "000083"; google_color_bg = "000083"; google_color_link = "FFFFFF"; google_color_text = "FFFFFF"; google_color_url = "FFFFFF";

While there, however, he changed his mind and studied for the medical profession. Thereafter he went to Leyden, where he took his degree of M.D. in 1744. While there he wrote his principal poem, The Pleasures of the Imagination , which was well received, and was subsequently translated into more than one foreign language. After trying Northampton, he settled as a physician in London; but was for long largely dependent for his livelihood on a Mr. Dyson. His talents brought him a good deal of consideration in society, but the solemn and pompous manner which he affected laid him open to some ridicule, and he is said to have been satirised by Smollett ( q.v. ) in his Peregrine Pickle . He endeavoured to reconstruct his poem, but the result was a failure. His collected poems were pub.
