By Jeanie McKenna When asked what he did for a living, James Agee called himself simply a "writer (Kramer 17), but that title doesn't convey the breadth and depth of his talents or the wide range of his concerns. Poet, film critic, essayist, novelist, screenwriter, journalist, social commentator: all of these were Agee's roles in a short but prolific career. He is best known for his Pulitzer Prize winning novel, A Death in the Family but he also wrote one of the great literary treatments of the poor in America, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (with photographer Walker Evans). Written at the height of the Great Depression, Famous Men chronicles the lives of Alabama tenant farmers and their families whom Agee and Evans visited in 1936. Without condescension and with a poet's eye, Agee's prose (along with Evans' photographs), portrays the dignity and strength in the lives of those most affected by the economic upheaval of the time. Even lesser known perhaps is Agee's work on screenplays, the most famous of which is

James Agee: Journalist, Critic, Novelist, Screenwriter

By JOHN LEONARD Published: September 25, 2005 Correction Appended Not every photograph ever snapped of James Agee caught him between pulls on a bottle or puffs on a cigarette. It only seems that way because the journalist/critic/novelist/screenwriter drank and smoked himself to death at 45, in 1955, at a time when postwar American culture conflated art with martyrdom and manhood with excess. Think of the poets lost to lithium, loony bins and suicide, the jazz musicians strung up and out on heroin, the abstract expressionists who slashed and burned themselves. Delmore Schwartz, Charlie Parker and Jackson Pollock pointed the way for Jack Kerouac, James Dean, Truman Capote, John Berryman, Elvis, Janis and Jimi. Like the Greek warrior Philoctetes, hadn't they been allowed to play so brilliantly with their bows and arrows because they suffered suppurating wounds? So the iconic image, emblematic and self-destructive, was the Shadow Man - a Humphrey Bogart, a

  • Buzzflash del.icio.us Digg Facebook ... Write to the Magazine In 1958, three years after James Agee suffered a terminal heart attack in a taxicab at 45, his friend and fellow film critic Manny Farber wrote an essay called "Nearer My Agee to Thee." The title captured Farber's characteristically mischievous attempt to wrest the real writer from his pious followers. "Even when he modified and showboated until the reader got the Jim-jams, Agee's style was exciting in its pea-soup density." In retrospect, Farber's effort to forestall sanctimony by objective assessment seems doomed, because Agee was such a prime candidate for literary sainthood: Handsome, tortured good looks, a cross between Montgomery Clift and Robert Ryan; body-punishing habits (alcohol, cigarettes, work jags, insomnia); a rebellious streak; many loves; obsession with integrity; and an early death. He belonged to that bruised, vulnerable, too-good-for-this-world poster club of actors, writers and rock stars whose authenticity was vouchsafed by premature passing.

James Agee Above all else, James Agee was a writer-from his modest early days in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he was born in 1909, to his final heart attack in a New York taxi cab in 1955, when he was forty-five years old. His father, who came of sturdy farmer stock in the mountains of Tennessee, became a postal worker who died in an auto accident, leaving James in the care of his Anglo-Catholic, well-educated mother. He was a student at tiny nearby St. Andrew's School, then at Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, and Harvard College, where he concentrated as editor and author of poetry published in the Harvard Advocate . Impressed by his achievement, Archibald MacLeish nominated him as an author in the Yale Series of Younger Poets and wrote the introduction.

Biography / History James Rufus Agee was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Hugh and Laura Agee on November 27, 1909. His father died in an automobile accident in 1916. Two years later, he and his mother moved to Sewanee, TN. Here, Agee attended St. Andrew's School, run by Episcopal monks. From there, he went to Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and then to Harvard University. A parody written for The Harvard Advocate contributed to Agee's employment at Fortune Magazine.

Told exceptionally well by Laurence Bergreen in what is, rather surprisingly, the first full Agee biography.... "James Agee: A Life" may be even be a better book than James Agee, the man or writer, deserved.
Newsday
In this first full-scale life of multi-talented writer—poet, journalist, novelist, film critic, screenwriter—Laurence Bergreen has made the most of this bounty. His "James Agee: A Life" is a biography of uncommon style and substance with a sure feeling for the subtleties of character.... What the biographer has given us, in short, is a superb evocation of the writer.
