He wrote the column, Stories of the Streets and of the Town . In the column, which McCutcheon illustrated, George Ade illustrated Chicago -life. It featured characters like Artie, an office boy; Doc Horne, a gentlemanly liar; and Pink Marsh, a black shoeshine boy. Ade's well-known "fables in slang" also made their first appearance in this popular column. Ade's literary reputation rests upon his achievements as a great humorist of American character during an important era in American history: the first large wave of migration from the countryside to burgeoning cities like Chicago, where, in fact, Ade produced his best fiction. He was a practicing realist during the Age of (William Dean) Howells and a local colorist of Chicago and the Midwest. His work constitutes a vast comedy of Midwestern manners and, indeed, a comedy of late 19th century American manners.

Ade, George (1866–1944), playwright. An American humorist most popular in his own day for what he called his “Fables in Slang,” he was born in Kentland, Indiana, and was also active in journalism and as a librettist and playwright. His librettist debut, The Night of the Fourth (1901), was a failure, but he found success with The Sultan of Sulu (1902), which started the rage for musicals about Americans abruptly transplanted to exotic places, and Peggy from Paris (1903). Turning his hand to straight plays, Ade had two hits with the comedies The County Chairman (1903) and The College Widow (1904), which added a new expression to the language. But none of his later plays enjoyed long runs, although Just Out of College (1905) and Father and the Boys (1908) were by no means failures. He had more luck with his librettos for The Shogun The Fair Co‐ed (1909), and

Olof Lindstrom goes Fishing, Indiana , and Hoosier Handbook and Guide for the Returning Exile George Ade was the child of John and Adaline Ade. His pioneer parents settled near Kentland , Indiana, only twenty years after the first white child was born in the settlement. Growing up as a young frontiersman, Ade was exposed to the beauty of the untouched prairie , and watched as the area was settled and converted for agricultural purposes. From a young age, Ade was an avid reader and this led him away from becoming a farmer like the rest of his family. After graduating from the newly built Purdue University, Ade wrote for some newspapers in Lafayette before moving to Chicago where he found work at The Morning News , which later became Chicago Record . He began publishing his own work in 1896, and kept writing for the rest of his life. He was well known as a humorist and for his tongue-in-cheek style of writing.

INDIANA'S POPULAR HISTORY :: george ade Essay prepared by IHS staff George Ade: The Aesop of Indiana Born in Kentland, Indiana, George Ade was the second youngest of seven children raised by John and Adaline (Bush) Ade. Lacking enthusiasm for manual labor, especially farming, the young Ade could usually be found with his nose buried in a book. An 1887 graduate of Purdue University, where he met and started a lifelong friendship with Hoosier cartoonist John T. McCutcheon, Ade worked as a reporter for the Lafayette Call and also wrote testimonials for a patent medicine company's tobacco-habit cure.
ADE AND THE CHICAGO RECORD In 1890 Ade joined McCutcheon on the staff of the Chicago Morning News, which later became the Chicago Record. After proving his worth as a reporter, Ade was put in charge of the column, "Stories of the Streets and of the Town,"

11. George Ade (1866-1944), The Fabulous Fabulist
Little known today and toolittle appreciated, the works of george ade charmed and entertained a generation of Americans from the 1890 s through the 1930 s.
http://www.geocities.com/philip_milazzo/GeorgeAde/
Little known today and too-little appreciated, the works of George Ade charmed and entertained a generation of Americans from the 1890's through the 1930's. There is a quantity of historical information about Ade on the world-wide web, but little of his written work is on-line. These pages are my contribution. They offer the contents of numerous editions of Ade's fables to the modern reader. These works were remarkable in their day, as they are now, for capturing the impressions of a newpaperman and a skilled observer of the commonplace in the vernacular of the day. This combination results in a unique, eyewitness picture of America in transition from small towns and smaller agricultural communities to densely populated, mechanised, technological cities. Ade's topics in the fables are not out-of-the-ordinary. He gives his wry and gentle observations on urbanization, higher education, sports, automobiles, salesmanship, the workingman's world, the magnate's office, the shopkeeper's counter, the joys and sorrows of relationships and the aspirations of youth. His view is that of a man who was born and raised in west Indiana farm country just after the Civil War, and who became a big city newspaper columnist, a successful playwright, world traveller and national celebrity. Sprinkled throughout Ade's fables we find references to contemporary persons and events whose significance easily escapes the modern reader. These pages represent my first attempt to annotate the fables, in the hope of adding significant historical texture to Ade's deftly understated prose.
