SWIFT'S wit makes us laugh, but it leaves us on the whole, perhaps, a little sad. Now we come to a satirist of quite another spirit whose wit, it has been said, "makes us laugh and leaves us good and happy."* *Thackeray. Joseph Addison was the son of a Dean. He was born in 1672 in the quaint little thatched parsonage of Milston, a Wiltshire village, not far from that strange monument of ancient days, Stonehenge. When he was old enough Joseph was sent first to schools near his home, and then a little later to the famous Charterhouse in London. Of his schooldays we know little, but we can guess, for one story that has come down to us, that he was a shy, nervous boy. It is said that once, having done something a little wrong, he was so afraid of what punishment might follow that he ran away. He hid in a wood, sleeping in a hollow tree and feeding on wild berries until he was found and taken home to his parents. At Charterhouse Joseph met another boy named Dick Steele, and these two became fast friends although they were very different from each other. For Dick was merry, noisy, and fun-loving, and although Joseph loved fun too it was in a quiet, shy way. Dick, who was a few weeks older than Joseph, was the son of a well-to- do lawyer. He was born in Ireland, but did not remain there long. For, as both his father and mother died when he was still a little boy, he was brought to England to be taken care of by an uncle.

The proverb goes back to 'Cato' (1713) by English essayist and poet Joseph Addison. First attested in the United States in 'The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table" (1858) by Oliver Wendell Holmes." From "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" by Gregory Y. Titelman (Random House, New York, 1996). Another source says early uses of the proverb related specifically to women. "When love once pleads admission to our hearts, the woman that deliberates is lost," wrote Addison. Cato (A Tragedy in Five Acts) by Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719) Rendered with this introduction by Richard Lewis of Stoic Voice Journal I take great pleasure in presenting the following rendering of Joseph Addison's play Cato . I first became aware of the play while reading the writings of Jim Stockdale. In an essay on public virtue, he writes: "George Washington was so taken with the character of Cato the younger in Joseph Addison's 1713 play Cato that he made the Roman republican his role model. He went to see Cato numerous times from early manhood into maturity and even had it performed for his troops at Valley Forge despite a congressional resolution that plays were inimical to republican virtue. Washington included lines from the play in his private correspondence and even in his farewell address." ( Thoughts of a Philosophical Fighter Pilot , Hoover Press, 1995, p.75.) Of course, this perked my interest and sent me out in search of Cato . As fate would have it, I found a very worn 1848 edition of The Works of Joseph Addison in three volumes at our local college in Helena and was given permission to borrow the volume containing Cato for several months to copy the text.

  • Addison, Joseph the son of a dean of Lichfield, educated at Charterhouse with Steele and at The Queen's College, Oxford, and Magdalen, of which he became a fellow. He was a distinguished classical scholar and attracted the attention of Dryden by his Latin poems. He travelled on the Continent from 1699 to 1703 , and his Dialogues upon the Usefulness of Ancient Medals (published posthumously) were probably written about this time. In 1705 he published The Campaign , a poem in heroic couplets in celebration of the victory of Blenheim . He was appointed under-secretary of state in 1706 , and was MP from 1708 till his death. In 1709 he went to Ireland as chief secretary to Lord Wharton, the lord-lieutenant. He formed a close friendship with Swift Steele , and other writers and was a prominent...

Executive summary: The Spectator English essayist, poet and man of letters, eldest son of Lancelot Addison, later dean of Lichfield, was born at his father's rectory of Milston in Wiltshire, on the 1st of May 1672. After having passed through several schools, the last of which was the Charterhouse, he went to Oxford when he was about fifteen years old. He was first entered a commoner of Queen's College, but after two years was elected to a demyship of Magdalen College, having been recommended by his skill in Latin versification. He took his master's degree in 1693, and subsequently obtained a fellowship which he held until 1711. His first literary efforts were poetical, and, after the fashion of his day, in Latin. Many of these are preserved in the Musae Anglicanae (1691-99), and obtained academic commendation from academic sources. But it was a poem in the third volume of
