Satsang with Robert Adams: Doing Nothing
Robert : Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om
Peace. Peace. Good evening.
It is an honor to be with you once again, to see you, talk to you, say my piece and go home. It is a beautiful evening with a nice breeze blowing.
All is well. Everything is in its right place. There are no mistakes. And you are all Divine spiritual beings, whether you like it or not (laughter).
It has come to my attention that many of you are trying to stop your thoughts, control your thoughts. You cannot really do this. Trying to stop your thoughts, as Ramana Maharshi says, is like a thief becoming a policeman to catch the thief. In other words, the thief that becomes the policeman will not catch the thief, because he is the thief himself, and so it is with our minds.
When we use the mind to stop the thoughts, the mind will not stop the thoughts at all, because the mind wants to go on living. Stopping the thoughts is annihilating the mind, and the mind does not wish to be annihilated. The mind wants to live on to fill you full of nonsense, superstitions. Therefore we do not try to stop, the thoughts.
What do we really do?

images by Robert Adams courtesy Matthew Marks Gallery; details to follow While many sources have been cited in reference to Robert Adams work, including the nineteenth century landscape photographs of Timothy O'Sullivan, the influence he denies is the one most heavily felt in the current exhibition at Mathew Marks Gallery: Walker Evans. In the 1940s, Evans used a hidden camera on the subway to capture people unawares. While Adams is best known for his photographs of the vacant suburban landscape, "No Small Journeys" includes people in these landscapes. The series, taken around Denver and near the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant, is being shown for the first time. As in Evans, the exhibition reveals a consistent method of capturing people in a state of oblivion as they experience life in a public space.
Robert Adams began his career as an English Professor, with no formal training in photography. In 1967 Adams greatly reduced his class load and devoted most of his time to capturing the newly sprung tract homes, gas stations, fast food restaurants, freeways, strip malls, grocery stores, and the people who inhabited these spaces. With his Roliflex 2-1/4 square format camera and with the help of a Guggenheim Fellowship, he began a seminal body of work that would soon become The New West (1974). Photographing in black and white for the past four decades, Adams has invented a very elaborate developing process which produces his seamless skies. In 1989, the Philadelphia Museum of Art held a retrospective of his work.

Robert Adam (b. Kirkcaldy, Fife 1728; d. London, England 1792) Robert Adam was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife in 1728. Often considered Scotland's most famous architect, Adam became a leader of classical revival in England for both architecture and interior decoration. His designs are particularly notable for their lavish use of color. Robert Adam was an eclectic who depended as much on good business sense as on his personal design innovations. His designs incorporated light, color, and detailed ornamentation. To generate his style he adapted motifs from classical antiquity, Italian, French and Renaissance influences and abstracted them into a personal style. Adam's most unusual designs were based on Etruscan vase decorations. The Etruscan Dressing Room at Osterley Park, Middlesex (1775-1776) is the only substantial survivor of eight such designs. Adam died in London in 1792. References
