Interview: Richard Adams
Richard Adams is most famously known as the author of Watership Down, the world-renowned tale of the rabbits at Sandleford Warren. Now 86, the Wash Common-born former civil servant exclusively reveals some truths about the book to BBC Berkshire. Richard Adams was born in Wash Common, just outside Newbury, in 1920. A civil servant for most of his working life, he penned Watership Down in 1972 which, after 13 rejections from publishers, became a world-renowned story that is now Penguin Books' best-selling novel of all time. BBC Radio Berkshire's Vernon Harwood met the now 86-year-old author for an exclusive interview about his life and works, including certains 'truths' about Watership Down. Listen to the full interview here. Both audio clips are approximately 15 minutes long so expect a few minutes downloading time. You read excerpts from the interview below. Richard Adams At Eighty
Contemporary Review August, 2000 by Joan Bridgman RICHARD Adams, who has just celebrated his eightieth birthday, can look back on a remarkable life where fame arrived unexpectedly at the age of 52. There had been little to forecast this during the anonymous years of public school, wartime service and 25 years in the Civil Service all powerful influences towards conformity and convention. But, irritated by sentimental rabbit tales and enraged by the permissive society of the 1960s, he stepped into another life in writing Watership Down, a book about rabbits intended for his children. Although only published in a first edition of 2,500 in 1972, it was initially hailed as a children's classic and progressed to large sales when it was selected by Kaye Webb for Puffin because she was delighted by the way the rabbits talked to each other 'Like civil servants'.

Richard Adams set the book 'Watership Down' in the region he grew up in. This area is a real place and is south of Newbury. The Enbourne marks the boundary between Berkshire to the North and Hampshire to the South. Most of the area, including Watership Down itself, lies in Hampshire, however for historical reasons the ridge of downs of which Watership Down is a part are called the Berkshire Downs. So, the rabbits of the Sandleford Warren lived in Berkshire. They moved across the border into Hampshire one dark night to live on the most famous and recognizable down of them all - Watership Down. current Avon paperback - 484 pages (left)
1975 Avon first paperback ed. - 478 pages (right) Amy's Summary:
Fiver, a small nervous rabbit, has a premonition something terrible is going to happen to their Sandleford warren. (A housing developer is planning to build.) Fiver tells his brother Hazel and they try to warn their aging Chief Rabbit, the Threarah, to no avail. Hazel and Fiver decide they must leave, and are joined by other males Bigwig, Dandelion, Pipkin, Hawkbit, Blackberry, Buckthorn, Speedwell, Acorn, and Silver.
The little band takes off across the countryside. Along the way they encounter many obstacles such as a stream, a bean field, and a road. They meet Cowslip, who takes them to his warren where the rabbits are healthy yet strangely philosophical. Once they learn the warren's dreadful secret, they leave, taking a new friend, Strawberry, with them.
Hazel leads the rabbits to safety high on Watership Down. They are joined by Holly and Bluebell, who fled the destruction of their old warren. But there's a problem - for their new warren to succeed they need does, female rabbits.
