Second President of the United States (1797-1801)
The question before the human race is, whether the God of nature shall govern the world by his own laws, or whether priests and kings shall rule it by fictitious miracles?
John Adams , letter to Thomas Jefferson, June 20, 1815 The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature; and if men are now sufficiently enlightened to disabuse themselves of artifice, imposture, hypocrisy, and superstition, they will consider this event as an era in their history. Although the detail of the formation of the American governments is at present little known or regarded either in Europe or in America, it may hereafter become an object of curiosity. It will never be pretended that any persons employed in that service had interviews with the gods, or were in any degree under the influence of Heaven, more than those at work upon ships or houses, or laboring in merchandise or agriculture; it will forever be acknowledged that these governments were contrived merely by the use of reason and the senses.
John Adams , "A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America" (1787-88), from Adrienne Koch, ed.

John Quincy Adams's Account of the Cabinet Meeting of November 7, 1823
Washington, November 7th. -Cabinet meeting at the President's from halfpast one till four. Mr. Calhoun, Secretary of War, and Mr. Southard, Secretary of the Navy, present. The subject for consideration was, the confidential proposals of the British Secretary of State, George Canning, to R. Rush, and the correspondence between them relating to the projects of the Holy Alliance upon South America. There was much conversation, without coming to any definite point. The object of Canning appears to have been to obtain some public pledge from the Government of the United States, ostensibly against the forcible interference of the Holy Alliance between Spain and South America; but really or especially against the acquisition to the United States themselves of any part of the Spanish American possessions. Mr. Calhoun inclined to giving a discretionary power to Mr. Rush to join in a declaration against the interference of the Holy Allies, if necessary, even if it should pledge us not to take Cuba or the province of Texas; because the power of Great Britain being greater than ours to seize upon them, we should get the advantage of obtaining from her the same declaration we should make ourselves.

Library of Congress. John Quincy Adams once wrote, "Could I have chosen my own genius and condition, I would have made myself a great poet." Although literary fame would escape the sixth president of the United States, throughout his life Adams was a serious reader and writer of poetry. Adams's poetic efforts included secular verse, hymns, and versifications of the Psalms. He also translated poems into English, including Christoph Martin Wieland's fairy-tale epic Oberon (the translation went unpublished until 1940). His long poem, Dermot MacMorrogh or the Conquest of Ireland , met with poor reviews;

John Quincy Adams:
A Presidential Unit
John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts on July 11, 1767 and was the son of the second president of the United States, John Adams. Political Party: Democratic-Republican
Years Served: 1825 - 1829
Vice President(s): John C. Calhoun
Name of his parents: John Adams and Abigail Smith
Wife’s name: Louisa Catherine Johnson
Yearly Salary as President: $25,000.00
Physical Stature: 5 feet, 7 inches
State of Birth: Massachusetts
“John Quincy Adams was a precocious child. He attended private schools in America and abroad when he traveled with his diplomat-father. He graduated from Harvard, became a lawyer, and wrote about politics. He served as a diplomat in Europe for three US Presidents. Through his childhood associations he became a linguist and well informed on many subjects. He was a capable secretary of state under US President Monroe. In fact, Adams was responsible for many of Monroe’s foreign accomplishments. He held several elected offices, but his independent actions separated him from his party. He barely won the presidency. The House of Representatives elected him because he did not have a plurality. He lost his bid for a second term, but he became a representative in Congress where he argued strongly for what he believed, no matter how controversial. In fact, he had a stroke debating an issue and died two days later.”

John Quincy Adams and "The Monumental City"

P resident John Quincy Adams, brilliantly portrayed by Sir Anthony Hopkins in the recent film Amistad, is the man responsible for designating Baltimore as "The Monumental City." When Adams visited the city in fall 1827, work had been completed on the Battle Monument celebrating the city's defensive victory in the War of 1812 on the site of the old court house. Construction was also well under way on the first major memorial to George Washington on land given by Revolutionary War hero John Eager Howard on a rise in "Howard's Woods," the area we know today as Mount Vernon. No wonder Adams gave the city its "monumental" designation. Yet, as we will discuss, perhaps his calling Baltimore by this famous name had as much to do with a lesser known Baltimore County monument as with these two more famous city monuments. John Quincy Adams, the son of our second president, John Adams, was a starchy and religious Bostonian. In his diary, in fact, he described himself as "a man of reserved, cold, austere, and forbidding manners." Besides being the only son of a president to achieve himself the highest office in the land, he was the only president to be married to a foreign-born wife. In 1797, while serving as a diplomat in Europe, at the age of thirty, he had married English-born Louisa Catherine Johnson, aged twenty-two. According to authors Jess Brallier and Sally Chabert in their recommended Presidential Wit and Wisdom (Penguin Books, 1996), Mrs. Adams "eventually became reclusive and depressed" and "regretted ever having married into the Adams family, the men of which she found cold and insensitive." Compounding the coldness she felt from her husband and his family, the authors noted that Mrs. Adams' depression was heightened by the untimely death of the couple's two eldest sons.

Assignment With his strong political background, his amazing strength in attempting to achieve the best for his country, and his remarkable political notions, John Quincy Adams led a strong and influential life. He worked fervently everyday of his life to accomplish the unthinkable.
Son of John and Abigail Adams, John Quincy was literally "born into politics." His father was the former president of the United States. His mother was very informed of everything that was happening in the country due to influential friends. She encouraged her son to follow in his father's footsteps. During the Battle of Bunker Hill, she brought him atop Penn's Hill to see what was happening. Here she told him that he had to "get to the House of Commons." (Dodge) She also told him that he was responsible for his father's life.

John Quincy Adams
JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
THE SIXTH PRESIDENT.
SCHOLAR, DIPLOMAT, STATESMAN. Many, many years ago, a grave-faced little child, five or six years old, might have been seen in Boston, looking with startled eyes on the red-coated soldiers as they marched through the streets; or listening in his father's house to the loud talk, that he did not understand, about England and King George and the Tea Party and other subjects of anger. A few years later this boy and his mother climbed to a hill-top in Braintree, where they then lived, and from there saw a terrible sight, for red flames and dark smoke were bursting from the warships in the harbor, and the roar of cannon came sounding far across the water. They saw great sheets of fire mount high into the air, for the wooden houses of Charlestown were burning furiously, and on Bunker Hill, ten miles away, the flash of shots could be seen. The first great battle in the American Revolution was being fought, and the British were learning that the Yankee farmers could fight. After the British left Boston, this little fellow, still only nine years old, used to ride on horseback into the city to bring back to his mother the latest news. It was twenty-two miles going and coming, which was a pretty long ride for a boy of that age.

TO A BEREAVED MOTHER
Sure, to the mansions of the blest,
When infant innocence ascends,
Some angel, brighter than the rest,
On wings of ecstasy they rise,
Beyond where worlds material roll;
Till some fair sister of the skies
Receives the unpolluted soul. That inextinguishable beam,
With dust united at our birth,
The more it lingers upon earth.
Closed in this dark abode of clay,
Not unobserved, the lucid ray To its own native fount returns. But when the Lord of mortal breath Decrees his bounty to resume, And points the silent shaft of death No passion fierce, nor low desire, Has quenched the radiance of the flame; Back to its God the living fire Reverts, unclouded as it came. Fond mourner! be that solace thine! Let hope her healing charm impart And soothe, with melodies divine, O, think! the darlings of thy love, Divested of this earthly clod, Bask in the bosom of their God.
