Douglas Adams passed into the galaxy this weekend. For you non-hoopy frood readers, Douglas Adams was the creator of THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY and its empire, which includes a radio series, a TV series, a computer game, a "trilogy" of five internationally best-selling books, a set of graphic novels, and a bath towel.
Still don't understand?
Don't Panic
Read on.
Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge in March of 1952. He was educated at Brentwood School, Essex, and St. John's College, Cambridge, where he earned a BA and an MA in English literature. In addition to his best-selling THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, Adams also wrote the Dirk Gentley novels and a nonfiction book about endangered species titled LAST CHANCE TO SEE. In the non-writing world he once worked as a chicken-shed cleaner, a bodyguard for an Arab royal family, and guitarist for Pink Floyd. More importantly, he also was a loving husband and father and friend to many, including lots of people on his chat site who regularly *talked* with him.
Adams will be greatly missed, especially by this reviewer.

By Neil Gaiman Douglas [Adams] had received many requests to turn Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy into a computer game, and had so far refused all of them. However, the time spent playing computer games had given him definite ideas: he knew he wanted the Hitchhiker's game to be far more a problem-solving, interactive novel than an arcade or space invaders game. In late 1983 he contacted Infocom, a Massachusetts based company whose previous games had impressed him, and suggested a collaboration. They agreed enthusiastically, and by January 1984 Douglas was in a position to announce, "I'm going to get the computer game done this year, which will give me an excuse for playing around with my computer. I'll be doing the work on a computer in Boston and accessing it from here on international packet-switching. I love all that!" Douglas Adams's collaborator on the computer game was an American, Steve Meretzky . They began by corresponding via electronic bulletin board, and then met in February 1984 for initial discussions. Adams wrote chunks of material, sent them via computer to Meretzky, who programmed them and sent them back. Douglas Adams actually designed and wrote more than half the game; the rest was a joint effort, using Douglas's ideas and material, and Meretzky's computer experience. The game itself was released in late '84, and proved an immediate success. The packaging was imaginative, containing an illustrated booklet with pictures of the guide and sundry alien phenomena, together with a 'Don't Panic' badge, Joo Janta sunglasses, fluff, a microscopic space fleet, demolition orders (real eager-beavers should take a very careful look at the signatures on them), and no tea.

'Hitchhiker' author Adams dies
LONDON, England Douglas Adams, author of the cult science-fiction comedy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, has died at the age of 49. British-born Adams died on Friday of a heart attack in Santa Barbara, California, his London spokeswoman Sophie Astin said. He was married with a daughter. The guide, published in 1979, was a satirical adventure about a group of intergalactic travellers. It opens with the Earth being destroyed to make way for an intergalactic highway. It went on to sell more than 14 million copies worldwide and was turned into a BBC radio serial and later a TV series. The book preceded a series of best-selling titles by the author, including The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe; Life, The Universe And Everything; and So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish. The books blended satire, memorably named characters such as Zaphod Beeblebrox and Marvin the Paranoid Android and witty philosophy, at one point supplying the answer to "the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything." The answer was 42.

It will host all I can find on the bloke - but not the hitchhiker vidz, at least not via my humble self :-(
I currently have a collection of audio interviews from the Man, and will be putting them together with clips and images to highlight the interviews. I have also added a sub-section Life, the Universe and Everything ~ in this area you will find links to Documentaries that I am sure would have been of interest to Douglas ~ Inspiration, Contemplation and Meditation...

SURFER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY
Douglas Adams offers opinions on flames, lurking and casual sex
By Bob Berg
Can you imagine how surreal it must be to roll out of bed in the morning, turn on your computer and watch people from all over the world discuss every intimate detail of your personal life? It sounds like the beginning of a Douglas Adams novel." It might be the beginning of his next novel, for this is how Adams occasionally starts his dayby surfing through alt.fan.douglas-adams on the Internet (where the above posting was found). I'd been looking forward to interviewing the 42-year-old "futuristic Mark Twain," author of the now-famous Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Adams wrote the book when he was only 27, and since then more than 15 million copies have been sold. The London resident and his wife, Jane, recently had a baby girl (Adams posted this message to his newsgroup: "In the womb she acquired the nickname 'Rocket' ") and announced her birth by saying, "Her name is Polly Jane Adams. ... She's long and slim and incomprehensibly beautiful." Unfortunately, my first encounter with Adams was to become a cyberspace screw-up After e-mailing a request for an interview, promptly receiving a "yes" and e-mailing again for a time and date, I heard nothing. My deadline grew nearer. My editor grew bellicose. Finally, thinking Adams was avoiding me, I dim-wittedly flamed him.

Science fiction often tells us more about social attitudes and anxieties than science itself, and can be a spur for debate about everything from genetics to consciousness, from war to climate change. Sci fi can move people to engage in science, inspiring young people to become scientists, and encouraging the general public to debate the consequences of science for society. It can also frighten us, making us wary of new technology and its unintended consequences. Is this all to the good, or does sci fi skew our understanding of science? Writers and filmmakers often take their inspiration from science and ask ‘what if…?’, but when it comes down to it, they have few qualms about ditching scientific accuracy in favour of gripping narrative. Does it matter how much actual science gets into sci fi, as long as it gets people talking? Do writers and directors have a responsibility to make their science accurate, or even educational?
