The Religious Affiliation of
Oscar "Zeta" Acosta
attorney, author, politician, Chicano activist
known as "Dr. Gonzo" in Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Acosta described his early adult years, during which he converted from Catholicism to become a Baptist preacher, but before long he rejected the Baptist faith specifically and Christianity as a whole. Although born into a Catholic family, Oscar "Zeta" Acosta apparently grew up in a family that was not active in Catholicism. While studying at the University of Southern California on a music scholarship, Acosta was dating an Anglo girl. In order to better be able to provide for her, as they were thining about marriage, Acosta joined the military. He joined the Air Force Band. But not long after that, she split up with him. This was a major trauma in his life. He decided that religion would provide the answers he was looking for. He began attending Catholic church regularly. Another member of the Air Force band he was in told Acosta about the Baptist, and he started attending a Baptist church near base. He attracted a lot of attention there, as he was quite a rarity: a Hispanic among whites, and a Catholic among Baptists. The young women there were fascinating by him and wanted to hear about his life as a "sinner." Acosta converted and became a Baptist preacher, starting out as a leader of the student or youth group. He was extremely enthusiastic about his new-found faith, and before long he had converted his entire family except his brother.

Postethnic Narrative Criticism : Magicorealism in Oscar 'Zeta' Acosta, Anna Castillo, Julie Dash, Hanif Kureishi, and Salman Rushdie
University of Texas Press. Abstract Frederick Luis Aldama's new book Postethnic Narrative Criticism argues that magical realism has become almost synonymous with Latin American fiction, but this way of representing the layered and often contradictory reality of the topsy-turvy, late-capitalist, globalizing world finds equally vivid expression in US multiethnic and British postcolonial literature and film. Writers and filmmakers such as Oscar "Zeta" Acosta, Ana Castillo, Julie Dash, Hanif Kureishi, and Salman Rushdie have made brilliant use of magical realism to articulate the trauma of dislocation and the legacies of colonialism that people of color experience in the postcolonial, multiethnic world. Aldama's book seeks to redeem and refine the theory of magical realism in US multiethnic and British postcolonial literature and film and also shatter the interpretive lens that traditionally confuses the transcription of the real world, where truth and falsity apply, with narrative fiction.

He was smart, rebellious, unpredictable, occasionally high on drugs, but terrifyingly honest to himself and the world. This is the story of the rage and fury of the Los Angeles Riots that swept LA during the gestation of the Movimiento Chicano , MECHA, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, and of the remarkable life of Oscar Zeta Acosta—a radical civil-rights lawyer who defended Chicano activists among them the LA 13, won new rights for Latinos , and challenged the LA establishment B urton Moore a journalist and writer who worked with Attorney Acosta witnessed many of the events that swept Los Angeles into a new age . Greg Wright The Literary, Political, and Legal Strategies of Oscar Zeta Acosta and Hunter S. Thompson: Intertextuality, Ambiguity, and (Naturally) Fear and Loathing As Thompson formulates his rhetorical strategy, "politics—as used in journalism—[is] the art of controlling [one’s] environment ... In my case, using what politely might be called ‘advocacy journalism,’ I’ve used reporting as a weapon to affect political situations that bear down on my environment." Thompson’s comment focuses on his journalism, but even his sense of journalism goes beyond journalism. Caught within the confines of a stupefying, unbelievable America, his reportage flirts with fictionality almost as a defense mechanism, a (self)reflexive response to its unpleasantness. Is it true? Almost reluctantly, Thompson informs us: More or less ... and this qualifier is the essence of what, for no particular reason, I’ve decided to call Gonzo Journalism. It is a style of "reporting" based on William Faulkner’s idea that the best fiction is far more true than any kind of journalism—and the best journalists have always known this.

"'Oscar "Zeta" Acosta: The Uncollected Works' is worth reading, despite a lack of of complete annotation and an introduction that does not fully illuminate his times....In 1972, he published 'The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo' and then 'The Revolt of the Cockroach People.' These two books, portions of which are abstracted in this collection, can be read as evocative period pieces of a pivotal moment in Chicano culture." - Rodolfo Acuna 06/30/1996

The revolt of the cockroach people. by Oscar Zeta Acosta About this title: In this exhilarating sequel to The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo, Acosta takes behind the front lines of the militant Chicano movement of the late sixties and early seventies, a movement he served both in the courtroom and on the barricades. Here are the brazen games of 'chicken' Acosta played against the Anglo legal establishment; battles fought with bombs as well as writs; and a reluctant hero who faces danger not only from the police but from the vatos locos he champions. What emerges is at once an important political document of a genuine popular uprising and a revealing, hilarious, ... read more Note: This is a general synopsis. The Work
Oscar “Zeta” Acosta’s first novel, The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo , is a fictional journey through many facts of his life. His tale is vulgar, gross, obscene, frankly carnal, truly pained, wildly raucous, and funny in turns. Acosta’s anti-intellectual stance and his rejection of literary convention express the shock and chaos he invokes to undo his own assimilation, re-create his life, and construct for himself a new and revitalizing identity. Acosta declares his novel an autobiography to dramatize the powers of artistic transformation and re-creation that Chicanos can apply to their lives. One’s identity, like a novel, is a work of art. On Monday morning, July 1, 1967, Acosta is a lawyer with one year’s experience in an antipoverty agency in Oakland, California. Born in El Paso, Texas, and long a resident of California, Acosta feels increasing tensions between his Mexican ancestry and his personal and professional assimilation into mainstream American culture. He bursts with self-loathing; he sees himself as a little brown Mexican boy in a barrel-bellied, sweating, tormented wild Indian adult body. Crazed with tranquilizers, alcohol, and the bad food he uses to appease his ulcer, Acosta snaps when he discovers his secretary Pauline has died. He walks away from his work and his life.
