"Oscar was not into serious street-fighting, but he was hell on wheels in a bar brawl. According to Thompson's obituary of Acosta "Fear and Loathing in the Graveyard of the Weird: The Banshee Screams for Buffalo Meat", Acosta was a powerful attorney and preacher but suffered from an addiction to amphetamines as well as a predilection for LSD-25. Acosta demanded that the book only be published on condition that his name be left in, and that his name and picture be prominently displayed on the cover.

Oscar Zeta Acosta
Oscar Acosta was born on April 8, 1935, and possibly passed away in 1974 under mysterious circumstances. Various rumours suggested that he was alive, however. The most notable was an anecdote in Paul Perry's Fear and Loathing biography that Rolling Stone received a hospital bill for a broken arm for a patient named Oscar Acosta in 1977 ( RS was unable to trace the bill any farther than the hospital). He started out as an anti-poverty lawyer after passing the bar exam and took his own shot at running for sheriff of Los Angeles County in 1970. A powerful writer and speaker, he wrote two books: The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo and The Revolt of the Cockroach People . A collection of his writing was published in Oscar Acosta: The Uncollected Works in 1996. The new Criterion Edition of FLLV , released in 2003, contains footage of Oscar speaking. Wikipedia has a nice little summary of Oscar's life ; check out the links at the bottom of this page for more information on Oscar.

Oscar Zeta Acosta
Oscar Zeta Acosta (April 8, 1935-) was a writer, lawyer, and political activist. He was born in El Paso, Texas and was raised in California's San Joaquin Valley, near Modesto. Because Acosta's father was drafted during World War II , Oscar held much responsibility in helping to take care of the family. As an attorney his activities began in Oakland but it was in East Los Angeles where he gained notoriety, prior to his mysterious disappearance in Mexico in the Spring of 1974.
Acosta is most well known as the author of two of the most important novels of the Chicano Protest Movement, Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo (1972), and The Revolt of the Cockroach People (1973). Both novels are highly acclaimed as major contributions to the Chicano literary renaissance. They are semiautobiographical and relate to Acosta's search for self-identity in the midst of an Anglo society at a time of great social unrest within the Chicano community.
Immediately following high school, at the age of seventeen, Acosta enlisted in the Air Force and was honorably discharged after four years of service. During a tour of service in Latin America, Acosta converted to Protestantism and became a Baptist missionary in a leper colony in Panama, although later, in

INTRO Chicano activist Oscar 'Zeta' Acosta was the inspiration for Hunter Thompson's hell-raising buddy in 'Las Vegas,' but his true legacy remains in the shadows.
Oscar "Zeta" Acostaan outrageous lawyer who once subpoenaed every member of the Los Angeles County grand jury to prove a pattern of discrimination against Mexican Americansis somewhat of a Chicano folk legend.
He was a driven, hell-raising attorney who was involved in high-profile civil rights cases in Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early '70s and inspired the character of Dr. Gonzo in Hunter S. Thompson's surreal book "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."
Acosta eventually gave up law and wrote two semi-autobiographical books, and then disappeared like a puff of smoke off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico, in the spring of 1974. But not before leaving an indelible mark on the pages of L.A. political history and Chicano literature.
His disappearance took place three years after the notorious drug-enhanced trip to Las Vegas that is the subject of Thompson's book and the current Terry Gilliam movie starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro.

A Tribute to Oscar Zeta Acosta

I originally wrote this post on Scholars and Rogues Scrogues Gallery . When I was asked to do a write-up for Oscar Zeta Acosta, I was happy to do it. As I was doing my research on Oscar, something mystical came over me. It was like I was meant to write his story. I like most people who hear Oscar’s name, know him for his literary works, Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo (1972) and The Revolt of the Cockroach People Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas . In Fear , the character of Dr. Gonzo — a man with a gargantuan appetite for food, drugs and dangerous living — is the perfect complement to Thompson’s journalist alter ego, Raoul Duke, who uses his assignment to cover an off-road race as an excuse to overindulge in booze and drugs in Vegas. literary Chicanismo Where the Buffalo Roam , and more recently, by Benicio del Toro in a memorable performance that hews closer to the characterization in the book.

They say Oscar Zeta Acosta disappeared off the coast of Mazatlan sometime in 1974. Vanished off the map. After years of deep-doodoo drug capering and ballsy Brown Power barristering, the legendary Acosta offed himself into the deep blue murk of one too many strange trips, leaving in the words of Hunter S. Thompson a "shitrain" of drug-hit theories and Houdini vagaries in his wake. See also... ... by Shermakaye Bass

... from August 5, 1999 This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Brown Buffalo's fateful trip, a quarter-century since "witnesses" saw him board a boat and head out into the ocean. And twenty-five years later, his disappearance is still unresolved. No death certificate, no letters home, no clues, no body. Over the years, the fabled Dr. Gonzo of Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas a real-life attorney whose on-the-street and in-the-courtroom persona was as surreal as his Brown Buffalo alter-ego has become something of an American Loch Ness monster. His legacy lives through various unsubstantiated sightings, through his writings, and through the bizarre theories that still abound regarding "Whatever Happened to Oscar Acosta"?
