Reading As A Woman: Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart And Feminist Criticism
Linda Strong-Leek Does "reading as a woman" change one's perspective on a text? Can a woman read as a woman after being conditioned, generally, to read as a man? In his On Deconstruction: Theory and Criticism after Structuralism , Jonathan Culler (1982) addresses these issues and forms several interesting conclusions. What does it mean to read as a woman? Culler's answer is brief and relatively problematic: "to read as a woman is to avoid reading as a man, to identify the specific defenses and distortions of male readings and provide correctives". Though Culler fails to outline these defenses and distortions, he does provide some fundamental guidelines for such a reading. Accordingly, to read as a woman requires that one approach a work from a feminist vantage and therefore, not regard the work from the purview of patriarchy. Consequently, in order to read Chinua Achebe's 1969 literary masterpiece, Things Fall Apart , as a woman, one must query readings which suggest that Okonkwo is the only major figure in the novel, and alternately analyze the motivations of principal female characters who are thoroughly developed within the work.

A traditional meeting of masks, minds and spirits in South Ika, Nigeria.
the Wise man in the Woods True art is universal. An old and sometimes pretentious idea until you meet–or read the work of–Chinua Achebe. No grand theories to build a universal civilization, instead the Nigerian offers stories steeped in Igbo philosophy, which have inspired the most diverse readers. The same books that helped to sustain Nelson Mandela during his prison years are studied as classics by students around the globe. Considered the founding father of the African novel, Achebe has attracted more scholarly papers and media articles than any other African author. His work–including some 20 books, numerous essays and edited collections of African short stories–has been translated into 50 languages.
The first novelist to offer an African perspective on colonialism, Achebe has turned the same critical eye to contemporary ills such as the rampant corruption of Nigeria’s rulers. In his most recent book, Home and Exile (Oxford, 2000), Achebe analyzes the current state of post-colonial literature based on his personal experience. In particular, he celebrates his good fortune in being part of a “crossroads generation.” Born in Nigeria in 1930, he recalls village elders infusing his childhood with traditional Igbo culture, while a modern education and the heady days of Nigeria’s independence provided the distance to both respect and criticize his society without passing judgement.

Book Review
December 1, 2003 Chinua Achebe, Anthills of the Savannah , Anchor Books, 1987; ISBN 0-385-26045-8.
When Chinua Achebe was a college student in Nigeria in the 1950s, he read Joyce Cary's Mr. Johnson, a smug British satire set in southern Nigeria that viewed Nigerians as rustic buffoons. Angered by this caricature, Achebe resolved to correct the record in Things Fall Apart. Written in 1958, Achebe's first novel castigates British colonialism for imposing Christianity and other alien values on traditional society. Achebe, Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembene and fellow Nigerian poet and eventual Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka would go on to trail-blaze a non-Eurocentric vision of Sub-Saharan Africa.
If it was necessary to throw out the colonizers as a first step toward national salvation, much work remained. Bearing witness to the failure of social justice and democracy to take root in post-colonial Nigeria, he dramatized the impasse in the 1987 Anthills of the Savannah.

Editor Bernth Lindfors does an admirable job of avoiding too much overlap, and so the same questions are not found over and over and the collection does constantly offer new and different perspectives. The last interview (from 1995) actually is among the more useful, in providing some of Achebe's personal and family background in more detail than found elsewhere, but the sum of the interviews does offer a good, fairly rounded picture of Achebe as both man and writer.

The father of modern African writing wins Man Booker International
24 June 2007
Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe, often called the father of modern African literature, was today awarded the Man Booker International Prize at an awards ceremony in Oxford, England. The Man Booker International Prize, worth £60,000, is awarded every two years to an author for a body of work that has contributed significantly to world literature. Achebe is best known for his novel Things Fall Apart , first published in 1958. It went on to sell over 10 million copies and was translated into 50 languages. His novels, which primarily centre on the politics of Africa and the effects of colonisation, also include Arrow of God and Anthills of the Savannah , shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1987. Achebe was born in 1930 and educated at the Government College in Umuahia and at the University College of Ibadan, Nigeria. In 1954 he joined the Nigerian Broadcasting Company and went on to study broadcasting at the BBC in London. In the late 1960s he served as a diplomat for the Biafran government. Achebe moved to the United States after a car accident left him paralysed from the waist downwards. He has lectured at many universities worldwide and is now Charles P Stevenson Jr Professor of Languages and Literature at Bard College, Annandale, New York State. In 2004, he refused to accept the Commander of the Federal Republic, Nigeria’s second-highest honour, in protest against conditions in his country.

  • Chinua Achebe 1930–
(Full name Albert Chinualumogu Achebe) Nigerian novelist, short story writer, poet, essayist, editor, and author of children's literature. The following entry presents an overview of Achebe's career through 1997. For further information on his life and works, see CLC , Volumes 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 26, 51, and 75.
    INTRODUCTION
Widely known as "the father of the African novel in English," Achebe is one of the most significant writers to emerge from contemporary Africa with a literary vision that has profoundly influenced the form and content of modern African literature. In his novels, he has chronicled the colonization of Nigeria by Great Britain and the political turmoil following its independence. Achebe's novels represent some of the first works written in English that articulate an intimate and authentic account of African culture and mores—especially his first novel, Things Fall Apart (1958), which critics have proclaimed a classic of modern African fiction. A major theme of Achebe's writings is the social and psychological impact of European imperialism on indigenous African societies, particularly with respect to a distinctly African consciousness in the twentieth century. Critics have praised Achebe's novels for their insightful renditions of African history as well as balanced examinations of contemporary African politics and society. Scholars also have praised Achebe's innovative fusion of Igbo folklore, proverbs, and idiomatic expressions with Western political ideologies and Christian doctrines.
