About the Author
Kobo Abe was born in Tokyo on March 7, 1924. His given name was Kimifusa ("Kobo" is a Chinese-like pronunciation of "Kimifusa"). His father, a doctor of the hospital attached to the Imperial Medical College of Manchuria, raised Abe in the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo. He attended an "experimental learning" elementary school that focused on debating and rapid reading (Abe could read one page in a few seconds). As a young man, Abe was interested in mathematics and insect collecting as well as the works of Poe, Dostoevsky, Nietzsche, Heidigger, Jaspers, and Kafka. The Manchuria Empire was set up by Japan and was ruled substantially by Japanese bureaucrats, who, like ones of the British Empire, had their sons return to Japan for education. Abe was sent back to Tokyo to attend Sejo Koko High School, a famous private school. He was later admitted to the school of medicine of Tokyo University. In 1944, when he heard that Japan would lose the war, and he forged a medical certificate to get home to Manchuria. Japan's defeat dissolved the Manchurian Empire. The ensuing disorder near the end of 1946 found Abe's father wandering Manchuria attempting to get back to Japan, but a bout of cholera proved fatal.

  • Kobo Abe 1924–-1993
(Also transliterated as K´b´ Abe and Kōbō Abē) Japanese short story writer, novelist, essayist, screenwriter, and playwright. The following entry provides information on Abe's short fiction career from 1983 through 2000.
    INTRODUCTION
Abe is viewed as one of the most significant writers to emerge from post-World War II Japan. His work as a short story writer, novelist, screenwriter, and playwright has been praised for its exploration of such existentialist themes as identity and alienation, and Abe is often referred to as the “Japanese Kafka.” His fiction has been perceived as a break with traditional Japanese literature and has been commended for its incorporation of universal concerns. Because Abe's work garnered attention internationally and was often translated into different languages, critics note that he helped to attract world attention to issues in postwar Japanese life.
    Biographical Information
Abe was born on March 7, 1924, in Tokyo, Japan. He grew up in the ancient Manchurian city of Mukden, which was taken over by the Japanese in 1931. His disgust at the behavior of the occupying Japanese forces inspired a strong anti-nationalist feeling as well as an alienation from his own country, two themes that recur in his fiction. He attended Tokyo University and was granted an M.D. degree in 1948. That same year, his novella

'Kobo Abe: Modernity and Isolation in a Changing Japan'
REVIEW: Article by Susan Llorens for Insite-Tokyo, an online magazine site. Llorens reflects on Kobe's work and on perceptions of absurdity in his writing. The article is very much an introduction to the work but is noteable for locating Kobe's writing in contrast to the context of autobiographical writing that has dominated post-war Japanese fiction. A longer piece might have provided more detail to shore up the effects of this perspective.

    Kobo Abe
Donoso's The Obscene Bird of Night also reminds me of Kobo Abe, particularly his insane works of the 70's, The Box Man and Secret Rendezvous . As long as we're drawing cross-continental comparisons, William Burroughs is there too, but Burroughs more surrealist, later work is pedantic and decadent in a too-familiar way. These two books of Abe's aren't familiar. They don't seem like successes, and it's not easy to say that they succeed on their own terms, because they don't appear to have their own terms. Calling them pretentious is besides the point, since the books don't have a pretense towards anything in particular. Psychological and and political intimations turn out to be complete blinds; what mostly flows out of the books is deep, total sickness. Apart from Inter Ice Age 4 , an early work which gets mired in the tropes of science fiction, most of Abe's translated books do have a purity about them. I discovered Abe through The Woman in the Dunes . At the time I was a huge Camus adherent, and the summary of a man trapped in a sand pit with a woman who has lived there for years, makes it sound similar to any number of existentialist works of fiction. It's not. Attempts to draw a metaphor do not work, since the book remains focused on the constraining of the man with a fundamentally unresponsive woman, and his very real interaction with the sadistic villagers keeping him there. The slow madness that overcomes him stems from the particular (and odd) circumstances rather than any speculative human condition. Far from existential, the story has more in common with Nabokov, especially the finely-ground fantasies

The Kobo Abe novel "Woman in the Dunes is a Japanese novel written in the 1960s and was made into a film in the same period. It traces, in a small book of less then 300 pages, the implications of being alienated and the contradictions of conformity freedom if that conformity has a purpose.
Niki Junpei a teacher trapped in a empty teaching job, a failed relationship and a life mapped up to retirement and death goes a secret 3 day trip- done to wind up his work colleagues. He is an amateur entomologist (bug collector!) which in Japan of the period is an equally conforming hobby. (The imagery of trapping, collecting, recording and pinning is an important an important motif.
Junpei is interested in sand bugs so goes to area of sand dunes. When he misses the last bus back, a group of locals suggest he stays the night in their village. They send him down a rope-ladder to a house at the bottom of a sandpit, where a young widow lives alone. She has been tasked along with a handful of other households by the village with preventing the sands from destroying the house (if their houses succumbs to the dunes then the other houses in the village will be threatened).
When Junpei tries to leave the next morning he finds the ladder removed. The villagers inform him that he must help the widow in her endless task of digging sand. Junpei initially tries to escape, upon failing he takes the widow captive, but is forced to release her when the house almost collapses after several days of sand build up outside. At one point he does escape only to be captured and gradually
