As an exploration and explanation of mathematical properties, the story of the Square who meets a Sphere is intriguing, and serves to fix in the mind the difference between point, line, plane, and three-dimensional object in a more memorable way than a geometry textbook. Readers, after an introduction to the two-dimensional world of the Square, gain an appreciation for the confusion felt by the Square when he meets a Sphere (or Circle in the Flatland) and the amazement the Square experiences when he visits the Sphere's three-dimensional world. The power of a strange idea is also demonstrated when the other denizens of Flatland find the suggestion of the three-dimensional world threatening and dangerous. Readers who are familiar with Madelaine l'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time will recognize a similar explanation of geometry, as well as correspondence between the Square's proposal of a fourth (and further) dimension and the idea of the tesseract. The book is useful in exploring mathematical ideas. It also serves as a mirror for the classes of Victorian society (the time period in which the book was written), since the number of angles corresponds to the person's place in society, with Triangles being the lowest and Circles the highest.

It is a story about a 2 dimensional universe where a square learns about a higher 3 dimensional world. Great book I highly recommend it. The story is a great illustration that people can use to help them understand the strange 4 th dimension. Of course, I am not talking about what some presume is Time. It has many names such as the spirit realm or hyper space, where presumably ghosts, hyper-beings, spirits and other such things exist. I often find myself trying to explain the 4 th dimension or hyperspace and end up feeling like the square in the book trying to explain 3D to flatlanders (2D beings) and being ridiculed.
