In several places, the report is updated or otherwise further developed, indicated by highlighted text. From Flatland to Hypergraphics: Interacting with Higher Dimensions Thomas F. Banchoff Department of Mathematics, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA Flatland is over one hundred years old, and it has never been more popular than it is now, with five new English editions in the past six years, and translations into eight foreign languages. Much of its social satire is still pertinent today, and it is only now with the advent of modern computer graphics that we can begin to appreciate the challenge of seeing phenomena from higher dimensions which so baffled the two-dimensional protagonist of Edwin Abbott Abbott's little masterpiece. In this review we begin to answer the questions: "Who was the author of this book?" and, "How did he come to write it?" Just over one hundred years ago, a busy headmaster produced a slender book which was at the same time a satire on the self-limitation of social perspective in Victorian England and an introduction to the geometry of higher dimensions. Dictionary of Literary Biography on Edwin A. Abbott Edwin A. Abbott was a man of many qualities. As a cleric, a biblical and literary scholar, and an author, he established a minor but nonetheless significant place in Victorian literature. While many scholars remember Abbott for his well-known debate with John Henry Newman, readers of fantasy and science fiction are more familiar with the novel that combines several of his various interests: Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions Abbott was a private man, and little is known of his life. He was born in London in 1838 to an Anglican family and received a degree in divinity at St. John's College at Cambridge University. He spent two years as assistant master at the King Edward School in Birmingham, then from 1865 to 1889 served as headmaster at the City of London School, where he championed the study of English. After his educational career Abbott devoted himself to scholarship, aided by his 1875 appointment as a lecturer at Cambridge. His earliest publications included books on William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope and on grammar and rhetoric. He also edited a collection of Francis Bacon's essays and wrote a historical Christian novel

Edwin Abbott Abbott 's parents were Jane Abbott and Edwin Abbott. His mother Jane was a first cousin of his father, so both had the name of Abbott which explains Edwin Abbott Abbott having 'Abbott' as both a surname and a middle name. Edwin Abbott was headmaster of the Philological School at Marylebone. Abbott was educated at the City of London School which had gained a fine reputation under Dr G F W Mortimer who was headmaster throughout the years during which he studied there. Following a fine school education, Abbott entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1857. After an outstanding academic career as an undergraduate he was the Senior Classics medallist in 1861 and was elected to a fellowship at his college in the following year. In the same year he was ordained a deacon and in 1863 he became a priest. At this time College fellows were not allowed to marry so, when Abbott wished to marry Mary Elizabeth Rangeley from Unstone, Derbyshire, in 1863, he had to resign the fellowship. Edwin and Mary had one son and one daughter. After leaving Cambridge, Abbott taught at King Edward's School, Birmingham, and then at Clifton College. In 1865 he was appointed as headmaster of the City of London School on the retirement of his former headmaster Dr Mortimer. It was a post which Abbott held for 24 years until he retired in 1889. Of course Abbott was relatively young when he retired being only 50 years old. He did not retire to give up work, rather he enjoyed writing and retired so that he could devote more time to his literary efforts. Before looking at some of the books which he published, we should first say a little about his fine qualities as a teacher and as a headmaster which saw the already excellent City of London School reach even higher standards during his years in charge [
