PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY
The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers three major degree options: a BS in physics, a BS in physics and astronomy, and a BA in physics and astronomy. The BS degrees are intended for students who wish to prepare for graduate school in a scientific or technical discipline or who are interested in professional careers in which a background in physics or astronomy is appropriate. The BA degree is designed primarily for students who wish to develop a general scientific background appropriate for many careers including health-related professions or MBA programs. The Certificate in Photonics may be added by students in the bachelor of science physics program. Students planning to pursue a degree within the department are urged to consult a departmental advisor at any time during the freshman year and should obtain a copy of the department's brochure for undergraduates in 100 Allen Hall. *The department offers the PhysicS Minor, best suited for students from other schools.

Creativity in Arts and Sciences: A Survey

Abstract
The motivation for this chapter lies in a survey on creativity among a significant number of artists and scientists (largely but not only astronomers) worldwide. It mainly illustrates there is no unique creativity process, although similarities abound between artistic and scientific creativity. No major difference appears between the groups of artists, nor between the subsamples of male and female surveyees. Comparisons are offered on the basis of well-documented creativity processes as well as a few additional comments.
1. Introduction
The unfortunate lady next to me lost a number of her illusions that evening. At least, she lost a few of her romantic and idealistic views on the way paintings were conceived and materialized. The noted local artist in front of us, also a guest for dinner of a mutual friend, had just gently explained her that, every time he was standing in front of a blank canvas, the challenge was simply to produce something he could sell and make a living out of it - a quite materialistically-minded creativity indeed. He would of course give as much as he could of himself in the work, but he would also totally integrate external constraints for his own subsistence and career. In fact, his creativity was basically market-driven. Is it different for science and astronomy in particular?

Starry Transit, an exhibition organized by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) in partnership with the Department of Astronomy , will feature an installation of new, site-specific sculptural works by Wisconsin artist Martha Glowacki. The installation, which is being created specifically for the 1,200-square-foot dome of the university's historic Washburn Observatory , explores the ability of night-flying birds to navigate by the stars. Starry Transit will be on view Saturday, Aug. 27- Sunday, Nov. 6. Starry Transit is a new work by Martha Glowacki, whose original vision and meticulous craftsmanship distinguish her art. Glowacki's UW-Madison training as a metalsmith can be discerned in her finely rendered sculptures, which are characterized by careful composition and intricate detail.

ART, ASTRONOMY MIX IN UNIQUE INSTALLMENT AT WASHBURN OBSERVATORY
MADISON - Starry Transit, an exhibition organized by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Astronomy, will feature an installation of new, site-specific sculptural works by Wisconsin artist Martha Glowacki.
The installation, which is being created specifically for the 1,200-square-foot dome of the university's historic Washburn Observatory, explores the ability of night-flying birds to navigate by the stars.
Glowacki addresses themes that bridge the worlds of art and science, examining essential questions of human existence such as the mysteries of life and death, the consequences of human attempts to manipulate nature, and the desire to understand the forces of the universe. "Starry Transit" continues Glowacki's dialogue on the relationship between man and the natural world as it explores our understanding of nighttime bird migration guided by the stars.

Physics and astronomy explores the behavior and structure of matter and energy at all levels to help describe our world and the universe.The laws of physics serve as the underpinnings for a vast array of science and technology. Physics has been helped us contemplate the origins of the universe and develop new products and technologies that meet human needs. The fundamental laws of physics find application in almost every branch of science, engineering and technology. The Department has active research programs in Astronomy/Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, High-energy Physics, and Nuclear Physics. These programs study natural phenomena from the cosmological scale (galaxies, black holes, etc.) to the sub-nuclear scale (quarks, gluons, leptons). Condensed matter physics involves the discovery, understanding and control of new-materials-related phenomena. Our high-energy physics, particle astrophysics and nuclear physics groups are involved in experiments which recreate the conditions of the early universe and help explain how it has evolved. In providing instruction in classical and modern physics, we cover such areas as mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, introductory modern physics, and quantum mechanics.

This is ascribed to Edward Kelly and included in Tractatus duo egregii, de Lapide Philosophorum, una cum Theatro astronomiæ terrestri, cum Figuris, in gratiam filiorum Hermetis nunc primum in lucem editi, curante J. L.M.C. [Johanne Lange Medicin Candidato]., Hamburg, 1676.
Edward Kelly
The Theatre of Terrestrial Astronomy
Many books have been written on the art of Alchemy, which, by the multiplicity of their allegories, riddles, and parables, bewilder and confound all earnest students; and the cause of this confusion is the vast number and variety of names, which all signify and do set forth one and the same thing. For this reason I have resolved in my own mind to loosen and untie all the difficult knots of the ancient Sages.
I will speak first of the inventors and restorers of the Art;
secondly, of the mutual conversion of elements, and how through the predominance of one element the substance of metals is generated;
thirdly, I will shew the affinity and homogeneity of metals, procreated in the bowels of the earth, their sympathies and antipathies, according to the purity and impurity of their Sulphur and Mercury; and that as metals consist of Sulphur and Mercury, they can furnish us with the first matter of the Elixir;
4thly, the preparation of Mercurial water;

Mankind's changing conceptions of the heavens over the past millennium will be explored in this exhibition, which showcases approximately 120 rare books and manuscripts from The Huntington's collection, most of them richly illustrated. Included are works by Ptolemy, Galileo, Copernicus, Newton, Kepler, Hubble, Einstein and others. Also featured are items on loan from several other institutions, such as an authentic moon rock from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), medieval manuscripts from the J. Paul Getty Museum, dramatic photographs of deep space and our own galaxy from Jet Propulsion Laboratory and California Institute of Technology, vintage and state-of-the-art telescopes from Caltech and Celestron, and images from the Carnegie Observatories, the Keck Observatories, and the Space Telescope Science Institute. In addition to viewing items on display, visitors will be able to explore, on CD and video, classic high points in the history of astronomy at series of computer stations donated through the generosity of IBM.
