The several interdisciplinary research centers and institutes of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences complement its academic departments. Although some of these units do not offer degree programs or courses, all faculty associated with them hold departmental appointments. Graduate students are admitted to degree programs by the academic departments but may often do much of their work in one of the centers, particularly if they are involved in advanced research. Institutes and centers conduct their own research and sponsor colloquia and guest lecture series. TOP OF PAGE CENTER FOR ADAPTIVE SYSTEMS The following list reflects the 2003/2004 faculty. Bad Astronomy
With space exploration and the tremendous impact it has had on our societies over the past centuries and especially this century, have also come schools of thought contrary to progress. The web site, BadAstronomy is dedicated to compiling and exposing contemporary astronomical misinformation. This kind of effort is essential to combat the forces of mass media in their endless need to sell advertisements and to "entertain" the general populations.

News and Events Prospective Students Undergraduate ... Contacts Public Collection, Library and Archives Canada If you are interested in why the physical universe is the way it is, and if you have good math skills, consider majoring in physics. Physics majors study the nature of matter and energy, from subatomic particles to the far reaches of the universe. They learn how an understanding of physics forms the basis for explaining many phenomena in other natural sciences, all of which ultimately are based in physics. Physics also underlies many developments in technology including lasers, transistors, magnetic resonance imaging, and even the World Wide Web. Physics students take a variety of generalized and specialized courses to meet their own interests. Many have the opportunity to work one-on-one with faculty doing exciting research at the forefront of physics and astronomy. Careers for students with physics degrees can be in physics itself (if they pursue a graduate degree), or in a range of other areas including astronomy, computers, engineering, patent law, medicine, science writing or reporting, and teaching.
