Buddhism And Its Spread Along The Silk Road
The civilizations which flourished along the Silk Road in the first millennium CE were open to cultural and religious influences from both East and West. Many religions, including Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, zoroastrianism and Manichaeism, gained new followers. But it was Buddhism, travelling the trade routes of the Silk Road, which became the common factor uniting the different peoples of the Silk Road.

The transmission was launched from northwestern India to modern Pakistan, Afghanistan, Central Asia, Xinjiang (Chinese Turkistan), China, Korea and Japan. Buddhism not only affected the lives and cultures on those regions but also left us with a world of wonders in arts and literature. After Sakyamuni entered nirvana, princes of different Central Asian states gathered to express their grief, crying, beating their chests, piercing themselves with swords or knives, or cutting off their noses or ears. This painting not only depicts their devotions to Buddha, but also accurately presents the appearances, garments and customs of different nations along the Silk Road and the history of cultural exchange between them.)

It was once the (more or less) "official" religion of Sassanid Persia , and played an important role in Achaemenid times. The foundation of the religion is ascribed to the prophet Zarathushtra, who is commonly known in the West as Zoroaster , the Greek version of his name. The modern Farsi form of the prophet's name is Zartosht ( ). Zoroaster came to reform ancient Aryan Indo-Iranian religious practices (some of which were parallel to the Vedic religion of ancient northern India and to some extent the ceremonies conducted by priests in Hinduism today). According to internal and external histories, Zoroaster lived in Persia . His dates are contested, but were clearly somewhere between the 18th and the 6th centuries BCE (although Plato put Zoroaster in the 64th century BCE). Zoroaster is thought to have written the Gathas , poems which have been assidiously preserved by his followers through centuries of oral transmission, before the whole of the Avesta (in which the Gathas are a central portion) were commited to writing in the Parthian or Sassanian periods. We have been rated a Welcome to the Stanford University Zoroastrian Group's World Wide Web home page. Our first year of re-existance at Stanford was a very interesting one. The high point, of course, was the Seventh North American Zoroastrian Youth Conference (ZYC '95). Held here at Stanford over the 4th of July weekend, the congress was attended by more than 300 Zoroastrian youths (age 13 - 45) from the US and Canada; youths from a few other countries outside North America, including England and Australia, were also able to join us. You can find more information on the congress in the Sunday, July 2nd edition of the San Jose Mercury News. This year we plan to be a bit more active on campus. We'd also like to increase our interaction with other student groups.
