Stay and play all day' says the publicity of this huge, unpretentious place - which mostly caters for the vast expanse of caravan parks and holiday parks along the Berrow/Brean sands. It's got a big park with farm animals as well as a petting zoo (with special sticker prizes for mums and grans who pluck up the courage to hold the rats). There's a vast outdoor adventure playground and an indoor play barn with different areas and some of the most awesome slides in the west. Good prospect for a rainy day if you're down this way. Also hosts a regular programme of themed fundays, usually centred on favourite characters - Dennis the Menace, Postman Pat, The Simpsons, etc. AVON VALLEY COUNTRY PARK River-based park with terrific play and climbing areas in and out, assault course, fairly scary drop slide, and lots of animals in the pets corner and riverside fields. Wooden play-circuit walk takes you past fields of donkeys, goats, llamas, cattle, sheep and more. Boating in season. Mini quad bikes and falconry displays. And there's a miniature train ride, like the one at Ashton Court. Also a big indoor play area and, new this year, a go-kart track, wey-hey! As this guide went to press, they were also planning to add even more fun stuff, but nothing yet confirmed, so check website or phone. This place is the business, a fabulous no-brainer of a day out that ought to burn off loads of excess energy. And it's great value for money.

That question is fast becoming the center of a growing national debate. Zoo officials counter that their methods are sound, and that they are expanding the size of elephant exhibits nationwide and increasing their support for international conservation programs for pachyderms in the wild. However, seven U.S. zoos have given up their elephants in as many years. Most notable are the San Francisco Zoo, which closed its exhibit in March and sent its last elephant to a private sanctuary, and the Detroit Zoo, where director Ron Kagan has become an unlikely spokesman for the animal rights position on this issue. In a recent speech, he said zoos are facing an identity crisis and could do better by animals.

Her travels included a visit to Phuket on the southern tip of Thailand, where she took a rainforest hike in the Khao Phra Taew National Park to visit a Gibbon Rehabilitation Center. Speaking of her experience Melanie said: My trip ended in Phuket with me feeling a lot better about the conservation of the gibbons. It made me feel good that the Thai people were doing what they could to save them, while half way across the world the Minnesota Zoo was doing their part to save this wonderful species but the story does not end there! During my last few days in Thailand I decided to visit a famous floating market just outside of Bangkok. When I got to the floating market I hired a boat taxi to paddle me through the canal to see all the colorful Thai products for sale. My heart sunk as the paddler pushed through the canal to a man sitting along the water holding an obviously drugged gibbon. I told my boat driver to pass by because I did not want to give the satisfaction of showing interest to the owner of this poor animal. On the return trip we passed the same man, who was yelling out a dollar amount to hold the gibbon. I saw an English-speaking woman who was interested (pictured right), so I pulled my boat over and told her all I had learned at the rehabilitation center. She understood and did not give the man money to hold the gibbon. When I got back to Bangkok I phoned the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project and let them know of this gibbon I observed at the floating market. I followed up when I arrived back in the United States and was pleased to hear that they had rescued the gibbon and that she was currently in quarantine.

Extractions: September 5, 2003 Encompassing an arid landscape of spectacular beauty and variation, the envisaged super park would be long and thin, stretching for about 1,500 miles (2,400 km) along the sub-continent's Atlantic seaboard, crossing the boundaries of South Africa, Namibia, and Angola. The first major step towards realizing the vision of the giant coastal park was taken when South Africa's President Thabo Mbeki and his Namibia counterpart, Sam Nujoma, recently signed a treaty to establish the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park between their two countries. The newly combined park spans the Orange River boundary to link South Africa's Richtersveld, which is community-owned, with Namibia's Ai-Ais and Fish River Canyon National Park. With visitors now able to move freely across the border within the greater park, a power-driven pontoon will carry them and their vehicles across the Orange River near the park's western extremity. This new transfrontier park represents but a small part of a much larger picture. The international coordinator of the project, Peet van der Walt, sees Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park as the launch pad for piecing together the giant subcontinental park.
