Extractions: This question started nagging me a couple of years back. Infact it was during my visit to Ranthambore Wildlife Sanctuary, just prior to Bill Clinton's visit. During my visit I witnessed a BBC documentary film team in action. With the full cooperation of the park authorities they had taken over all the spots that tigers were likely to frequent. They were equipped with jeeps, expert guides and sophisticated communication equipment. When a tiger was spotted the word spread and everyone, including the assorted tourists, zeroed on to the poor creature. The lord of the jungle was instantly converted into a circus animal ! If this was the scenario during a routine filming assignment, then one can well imagine the 'tamasha' that took place before and during Clinton's visit. Little wonder that the VIP tiger vanished thereafter!? More well known people and organisations have made their money and reputations on the blood of the tiger rather than contributed to it's survival. While enhancing their own reputations, the resulting publicity has created a market for the tiger and it's products. Infact, mafias have got involved in the wildlife trade and poaching has increased all over the world. Let us look at some of the other negative aspects of such exploitation of the tiger:

Extractions: Let's move on for those of you who have now decided to try your hand at it. The first questions most people ask are about equipment and technique. Equipment and technique are obviously important but there are a few things that are equally or maybe more important. These are development of your mindset and skills other than your photographic ones. You have to, if you don't already, start understanding the environment and start learning to look after it. You have to feel that the environment and it's animals are a part of your family. You have to care for it and protect it. Whether you realize it or not but this attachment shows in your work. A lot of people take this in the wrong way. This does not mean that you will have done a good deed by saving a prey from a predator. Another reason for sending the spectator to the grave is because as a wildlife photographer you will have to slowly learn to predict the unpredictability of wild animals. You have to make a database in your mind of things like expressions that always precede some action. An example of this is the way a tiger's eyes become amazingly focused, ears get drawn back and movements are extremely basic just before it plans to charge. In such a situation, unless you're extremely sure about your safety, it's time to get out of there. It would be better to live to shoot another day than to die shooting maybe an out of focus shot!

Extractions: Last month, a federal judge struck down an attempt by the Bush administration to weaken dolphin-safe tuna labeling. The dolphin-safe tuna label was created in 1990 under a program of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. It was developed in response to fishing practices that deliberately netted dolphins in areas where schools of yellowfin tuna swim with dolphins. Between 1950 and 1990, when these practices were widely used, it is estimated that tuna fishing needlessly killed 7 million dolphins.

Comment on this article In spite of being a NH registered and 501-C-3 federally tax-exempt charity incorporated for the purpose of rescue and rehabilitation of animals, Greenville Wildlife Park of Greenville, NH, is selling some animals on the open market, and sending others to questionable dealers. In past years rare rescues took the stage while discussion of prolific breeding and selling of baby animals went unnoticed. Now the public that supported this charity is needed to help send the animals to sanctuary.

Extractions: PetLovers.Com Pet Lovers Forums (General) Animal Rights Discussion PDA View Full Version : Second Elephant died-One left Magnum 03-04-2005, 01:01 PM Peaches, believed to be the oldest African elephant in captivity, died Monday, January 17, 2005 at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. She was one of three aging elephants sent to Chicago by the San Diego Wild Animal Park in 2003 when the Zoological Society imported wild-caught juvenile elephants from Africa for breeding purposes. Peaches died years short of an elephant's natural lifespan of up to 70 years. Tatima, also from San Diego, died at the Lincoln Park Zoo last October at age 34. Wankie, the third elephant sent to Chicago by the San Diego Zoological Society, is now alone at the Lincoln Park Zoo. The San Diego Zoos shocking betrayal of the elephants who had lived in San Diego for over three decades was decried by animal protection advocates, who predictedcorrectlythat the elephants would not live long in Chicago, where, after being trucked 2000 miles, they would be forced to spend long winter months confined indoors in concrete stalls. Lisa Landres, former elephant keeper for the San Diego Zoo, animal cruelty investigator for the Humane Society of the United States, and captive wildlife specialist for Friends of Animals, has harsh words for the Zoological Society. "It was negligent and idiotic to move a geriatric elephant to a hostile climate," Landres says. "Now it is imperative that the remaining elephant be placed in a sanctuary in a warmer climate before the record becomes three dead of three dumped." Landres adds, No elephant should live alone," noting the strong social bonds formed by the animals.

Extractions: Please Help Save the Elephants at SF Zoo On Sunday, March 7, 2004, the San Francisco Zoo euthanized Calle, a 37-year-old Asian elephant, who had been at the Zoo for seven years. Calle was taken from the wild (Asia) when she was roughly one year old. In the wild, Calle would be in the prime of her life, but at the Zoo she suffered from degenerative joint problems, lameness and chronic infections of her feet. At the end of her life, Calle's condition had deteriorated so badly that she had trouble walking and was constantly dosed with painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs. The Zoo blamed Calle's problems on the time she spent in the circus, but Maybelle and the zoo's two surviving elephantsTinkerbelle, an Asian, and the African elephant and Luluhave spent virtually their entire lives in San Francisco (after being taken from the wild as babies in the 1960's specifically for the zoo). Both of the two surviving elephants suffer from health problems similar to Calle's. Each has been on a steady diet of painkillers and anti-inflammatories for several years.
