By the time the thousands of prospectors landed at Dawson City in the Yukon Territory they found all the valuable ground staked. Consequently, many of them either returned to their homes empty-handed or fanned out into the surrounding country hoping to find new areas where they could make their fortunes. Many continued down the Yukon River to the already established Fortymile mining district and some further on to the Eagle district. Approximately 150 miles further down the river lay the town of Circle, the heart of the Circle district. Although the strikes in the Klondike are the best known, previous discoveries were made and production began in tributaries along the upper Yukon in the mid-1880s with discoveries along the Fortymile River. Following these, in 1893, two Creoles, named Pitka and Sorresca made additional discoveries in what later became the Circle Mining District. Their initial discoveries were somewhere on Birch Creek. News of the discovery started an influx of prospectors into the area and in the following spring (1894) discovery of the placers on Mastodon Creek. As prospectors continued to probe the drainages surrounding Birch and Mastodon Creeks, gold was also discovered on Independence, Miller, Deadwood, and Boulder Creeks all within what eventually became the Circle mining district.

    Extractions: Archaeological work at Canyon City shows evidence that First Nations people have used this area for many thousands of years. There were seasonal fish camps above and below Miles Canyon and the Whitehorse Rapids, and First Nations trails extended along the banks of the river. Early explorers had little contact with the indigenous population, although Frederick Schwatka, in 1883, made note of a First Nations portage trail bypassing Miles Canyon, and George Mercer Dawson, in 1887, noted the large number of salmon above the canyon - salmon were one of the fish that were important to the aboriginal population. In the early 20th century traditional patterns began to change, and many First Nations people moved to Whitehorse. Some had seasonal jobs there with White Pass, or worked in the area as big-game guides or trappers. On August 16, 1896, Skookum Jim, Tagish Charlie and George Washington Carmack found gold in the Klondike, and the Yukon was changed forever. It was nearly a year, however, before the outside world knew about the find; the steamship Excelsior arrived from the north in San Francisco on July 15, 1897, and the

    Extractions: Main Page Whitehorse Info In 1895 , the North West Mounted Police were assigned the arduous tasks of establishing police detachments, carrying mail and introducing and enforcing law and order in the Yukon Territory. A significant feature in the Yukon's police history was the dog patrols sent to remote outposts and used to carry the Royal Mail. During February and March 1995, Centennial Patrol retraced the patrol route from Dawson City, Yukon to Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories and back. This Patrol will pay tribute to those historic police patrols made throughout the Yukon's wilderness. This limited Edition Commemorative Dispatch Envelope was exclusively created by Canada Post for the 1995 R.C.M.P. Yukon Centennial. On February 26th, 1995, Centennial Patrol set out on a treacherous 475 mile journey along the original patrol route from Dawson City via Seela Pass, Hart River, Wind River, Peel River, Caribou Mountain cut-off to Fort McPherson and return. In total, 1000 miles of the most demanding terrain and severe conditions in the world were conquered during the six week expedition. This envelope was carried in the Centennial Patrol's Official Mail Pouch. The three dog teams and nine Polaris snowmachines were operated by RCMP personnel and civilians, experienced in the conditions of the trail. It is significant to note that the R.C.M.P.'s tradition of working with First Nations people played an important role in this Centennial Patrol. The team included an Aboriginal Constable, as well as the first female Aboriginal Constable to travel this historic route, and a First Nations dog musher from Fort McPherson, who is a descendant of a Native guide from one of the original Patrols.
