    Extractions: Porthill Publishers The portrait tradition of Anastas Jovanovic was continued by Milan Jovanovic (1863-1944), the brother of painter Paja Jovanovic. He obtained his education in photography in Vienna and Paris. He achieved an aesthetically high photo-visual quality in his portraits. He did portraits of famous Serbian authors, actors and writers from the end of the last century and the beginning of this century (Milos Cvetic, Pera Dobrinovic, Ilija Stanojevic, Milorad Gavrilovic, Ljuba Nenadovic, Milovan Glisic, and others). Rista Marjanovic, a professional newspaper photographer, studied journalism in Paris. His war photographs were published during the war in foreign newspapers and were presented together with the allies' photographs at exhibitions in the Louvre, Paris, in 1917, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, as well as in many cities all over America in 1917. Between the two world wars, both amateur and professional activity took on a new elan, which was made possible by the development of photographic technique, since it considerably simplified the procedure of taking photographs. Innovations in photography still did not require large financial resources, therefore a group of amateur photographers, Surrealists by artistic choice, revealed their talent not only in the field of verbal art, but in the field of photography as well. The most distinguished name was Nikola Vuco, who added wealth to surrealistic photography with his innovations. They were in accordance with the theory of Surrealism, and were based on the application of purely photographic medium. It enriched the history of photography with evidence that photography has a specific visual expressiveness and technique, which became completely independent from painting.

    Extractions: Porthill Publishers The history of Serbian periodicals started with the magazine "Slaveno- serbski magazin" ("Slavo-Serbian Magazine"), which was printed in Venice in 1768. The founder and the editor of this magazine was Zaharije Orfelin, one of the best educated Serbs of that time, a writer, historian, painter, engraver and the publisher of the first periodical and "Perpetual Almanac". He was educated and learned the trades in Pest, Vienna and Venice, and he worked and lived in the Serbian milieu, in Sremski Karlovci, Novi Sad and in other places in what was southern Hungary at the time. Although the "Slaveno-serbski magazin" produced only one issue, it can be regarded as the beginning of Serbian publicist writing, too. In its foreword, written by Orfelin, the relevant questions of cultural life among the Serbs were discussed and certain ideas and programmes were introduced. This foreword, printed on thirteen pages of the publication, has been evaluated by historians as being a very significant text, in which the doctrines of European eighteenth century Rationalism and the Enlightenment were presented in the Serbian language for the first time. The first newspaper in Serbian also appeared outside the territory of what is today Serbia, in Vienna in 1791 ("Serbskija povsednevnija novini" - "Serbian Daily Newspaper"). The first Serbian journal ("Novine serbske" - "Serbian Newspaper"), 1813) and the first Serbian illustrated periodical ("Zabavnik" - "Pictorial Magazine", 1816) were also published in the capital of the Austrian Empire. Several significant Serbian journals and periodicals were issued in Pest in the first half of the nineteenth century. The first one was the "Letopis Matice srpske" ("The Chronicle of Matica srpska"), which was started in 1825, and is still being published as one of the oldest literary periodicals in Europe.

The Yugoslav crisis and the disintegration of Yugoslavia have been largely caused by the rise of the Great Serbian forces and their more and more aggressive actions. While in some parts of ex-Yugoslavia the Great Serbian hegemony proved extremely disastrous, with unprecedented bloodshed and destructiveness, in Montenegro a dangerously perfidious strategy of submission is being pursued, which in many ways reminds us of the activities of fascism on the eve of the Anschluss of Austria in 1938.

While moderate commentators referred to a campaign of "ethnic cleansing," those targeted by the violence spoke of "genocide."
