Situated in the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula, the Republic of Yemen has considerable variation in its physical landscape and climatic conditions, ranging from the Rub al-Khali (or "Empty Quarter") desert region, to fertile mountains and plateaus fed by twice-yearly monsoons. Yemen's remarkable architecture including palaces, mosques, and multi-storied mud and brick houses is one of the country's most celebrated characteristics. The strait of Bab el Mandeb, located at Yemen's southwestern tip, links the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean. The country's ancient kingdoms, built on the spice and incense trades, used its strategic ports in concert with overland camel caravans to give Yemen a historically important role in Middle Eastern trade. The coastal town of Al Mukha became a major force in the coffee trade, and it is from there that the word "mocha" was derived and applied to coffee.

Yemen gained independence from Great Britain on November 30, 1967. The country's full name in Arabic, the official language, (al-Jumhuriyah al-Yamaniyah al-Sha'biyah al-Dimuqratiyah) People's Democratic Republic of Yemen. Yemen is governed by the United Political Organization National Front, the country's only political party. About ninety percent of the people in Yemen are Arabs. The rest are Indians, Pakistanis, or East Africans. Most of Yemen is hot and dry. There are only a few fertile areas where the land can be farmed. Yemen is an important port and oil center. Its oil refinery and port provide the country with most of its income. The oil refinery can process about 50 million barrels of oil a year. Ships of many nations use the port of Aden for refueling, repairs, and transferring cargoes. Coffee and Qat are the main cash crops. Coffee is a major export.

The British, who had set up a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century, withdrew in 1967 from what became South Yemen. Three years later, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. Sana'a, An Arabian Islamic City, (World of Islam Festival Trust): This encyclopedic collection of very detailed information on Sanani Yemeni customs is very rare. Only 2,000 copies are known to exists, but if you live near a large library, you might look it up. Tribes, Government and History in Yemen, (Paul Dresch): This book describes the tribal customs and politics in great detail. It is most relevant to northern half of Yemen, but interesting reading for those who plan on hiking in the mountains of Yemen (which I highly recommend).

Adult rural women in Yemen will be taught literacy skills through the writing and documenting of their own poetry and that of other women in their community. A cultural resource that is valued locally and nationally will be utilized to teach rural women a potentially empowering skill that is not currently perceived by them as relevant to their lives. The project will be community driven from the planning stages, and it has the support of Ministry of Education officials in Yemen. The second problem the project addresses is Yemenâs very high illiteracy rate for women â 77% in 1996 (UNICEF). According to Min. of Education personnel, current literacy efforts aimed at rural women are not seen by these women as relevant to their lives as agriculturalists. One hypothesis to be tested is that they might find literacy efforts more relevant it these focused on cultural expressions that they themselves value â in this case, their traditional poetry. Using the Language Experience approach to community literacy (which taps into the philosophy of Paolo Friere) and Community Counseling Learning developed by Fr Curran, women will be taught reading and writing skills through the transcription of poetry that they and their neighbors have composed. As the process develops, these and other poems composed by project participants will be printed and disseminated in the community, and possibly outside the community as well.

Sackler Gallery For over a thousand years, from around 800 B.C.E. to 600 C.E., the kingdoms of Qataban, Saba (biblical Sheba), and Himyar grew fabulously wealthy from their control over the caravan routes of the southern Arabian peninsula and, in particular, from the international trade in frankincense and myrrh. Excavations at the capitals of these ancient kingdoms have yielded spectacular examples of architecture, distinctive stone funerary sculpture, elaborate inscriptions on stone, bronze, and wood, and sophisticated metalwork. For the first and only time in North America, Yemen's stunning artistic heritage will be examined in a major international exhibition organized by the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. Drawn from the collections of the Republic of Yemen, the American Foundation for the Study of Man, the British Museum, and Dumbarton Oaks, this exhibition of approximately 200 objects explores the unique cultural traditions of these ancient kingdoms. It gives special emphasis to the rich artistic interaction that resulted from overland and maritime contacts linking the southern Arabian peninsula with the eastern Mediterranean, northeastern Africa, and south and southwest Asia. Belief systems also differ according to culture, affecting behavioral problems in adolescence. Thus, problems are defined, in part, by cultural norms and expectations, and variations in these may alter the emphases of adolescents' problems (Porteous, 1985). Gender Yemen If adolescents' problems vary according to culture and gender, research that examines those relationships has obvious value - all the more so if such research is carried out in previously unexplored cultural contexts. The present study explored the issue of adolescents' problems with respect to gender and cultural factors in the Republic of Yemen. There has been no previous research on the problems and concerns of Yemeni adolescents, yet the nature of the country suggests that such an investigation could be a rich source of comparative data.
