History B In 2003 only six cities had a sizable population: Cheyenne Casper Laramie Rock Springs (18,400), Gillette (21,840), and Sheridan (16,016). Cheyenne, the state capital, is a commercial, industrial, and transportation center and a gateway to the Rocky Mountains. It is the site of the Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, an important United States defense arsenal. Casper is located in the heart of Wyomingâs oil fields. With its refineries and oil-field equipment industry, it is the stateâs chief manufacturing and wholesale trade center.
