The group is being formed to allow statisticians to contribute their skills in a useful manner. I attended this meeting and was very impressed with the experiences of people there. They ranged from education at a range of levels, working with health clinics in Guatemala and assisting groups in the process of data collection and analysis. ASA President Fritz Scheuren attended the meeting and is strongly supporting this effort. The following is a note from group organizer Jonathon Kurlander. If you are interested in more information on this type of work, please send him a note. The ASA Special Interest Group on Statistical volunteerism is open to any ASA member with an interest in using their skills to help with projects ranging from curriculum development and science fairs, to human rights assessments and world health. Roles range from the more administrative tasks such as organizing people, meetings and emailing to the more cerebral, such as discourse, design, analysis and report writing.

The IMS is an interactive model that allows the user to view geologic columns with depth to and thickness of geologic units at any point on the map, simple geologic cross sections, and plan view maps that show the extent of 32 different coal deposits within the Eocene Wasatch and Paleocene Fort Union formations. Formation tops for the Upper Cretaceous Lance Formation, Fox Hills Sandstone, and Bear Paw/Pierre Shale were added to the project. Water quality data from available wells were also a component of the project that is accessible with the IMS. The intended purpose of the IMS is as a predictive tool for developers, water users, coalbed natural gas producers, and regulators to more accurately estimate the quality of ground water prior to production. Interpolated water quality values are available at any point in the project area and both a bubble plot and a color-contour map show the location and the range of values for various constituents.
