But for every blogger out there, there are probably a dozen or more others who prefer reading to writing. With the explosion of Weblogs come new ways of reading them. The solutions used to keep up with blogs are often called news aggregators. Much of the current software is still buggy and imperfect. It is in some ways like the early days of the Web when many issues were still being resolved, but these approaches may well become more integrated into e-mail, Web browsing, and stand-alone software in the next few years. THE DAILY CONUNDRUM Weblogs and news media sites share a common strength and a common weakness. With frequent updates, these sites help us keep track of the latest news, opinions, and rumors. Unfortunately, the frequent updates mean that we spend more time trying to keep up with them. So, we can check all of the news Web sites and blogs of interest every day, starting from our bookmarks or some other source. But this gets tedious rather quickly, especially as the number of sources of interest multiplies.

And he can't imagine how, but last semester Biff found himself suddenly a made-member of a glamorous creative writing workshop, otherwise reserved for MFA candidates in the English department. Presiding over this weekly dream-salon was a literary superstar whose agent had somehow allowed him to be flown out all the way from Manhattan. Like any red-blooded American boy, my nephew Biff has always kept an eye out for the main chance. So he decided to grab this opportunity to transform himself into a card-carrying creative writer. His classmates (if I'm not presumptuous in using the term) are the future Creative Writing Industrialists of America, and they're working on fictional dissertations and metafictional theses, sans footnotes. This is one of those self-evident truthswhy would anyone set out to write any other way? But what does that really mean, what do sentences look like that are not that way, what sorts of things are wrong with them, and how do you fix them? Sentences do have ways of becoming flabby, redundant, wordy, unclear, indirect, passive, and just plain old hard to understand. Even so, they remain grammatically "correct"all their subjects and verbs agree, the commas are in the right places, the words are spelled correctly. Still, these sentences are far more difficult to read than any sentence with just a comma problem. The following sections can't pretend to cover all of the ways sentences can go bad at this higher level, but they do cover seven of the most common problems and shows you ways of fixing them. And knowing these seven will probably enable you to spot all the others we have not trapped and labeled yet. Extractions: Editor's Message I mentioned in September that from time to time this journal year I'd invite guest authors to write the JAAL Technology column. This month's guest, Mike Sharples, has worked for many years on innovative approaches in language and technology. He was a pioneer in creating environments for students to use computers to explore patterns in language through his Phrasebooks and Boxes programs. One thing I especially liked about this work was that Mike saw that language learning could be fun, and he built that perspective into his software. He has also been a leader in areas such as artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and computer support for collaborative writing. Working, as he does, in the United Kingdom, Mike has a perspective on educational technology issues that will add to my view from the United States. When I asked him if he would be interested in writing the October column, I also told Mike that I would very much like to hear his latest views on electronic books. When he wrote back to me with his acceptance, he suggested the topic of paper versus electronic publication.
