Teachers likely assigned you extra homework and gave more difficult tests. Rather than focusing on the memorization and recitation of facts such as names, dates, and formulas, your First Year Experience (FYE) course will center on the development of critical thinking skills. Learning will be fast paced, with assignments designed to encourage the expression of advanced ideas through writing and thoughtful class discussion. In addition, the limited size of your FYE class offers a unique opportunity for you to work closely with professors in a stimulating intellectual environment and develop strong relationships with fellow classmates in the Honors College community.

We look forward to working with you this quarter. We think you will find this course to be intellectually and personally rewarding. A glance at TV or a newspaper shows that race and group identity remain hot topics. From the OJ Simpson trial to the aftermath of 9/11, race and intergroup relations are often tense and divisive. Skin Deep explores the ways in which difference defines us and affects all our lives, in the U.S. and on a global scale. We will learn how people develop an identity and how the sense of us and them can be a source of conflict. W

Jan 96: Finding One's Own In Cyberspace Are women harassed on the Net? Reporters called from all over the country with Moderators adhere to soc.feminism s lengthy charter, which explains the http://llk.media.mit.edu/papers/archive/Bruckman.html
Extractions: The week the last Internet porn scandal broke, my phone didn't stop ringing: "Are women comfortable on the Net?" "Should women use gender-neutral names on the Net?" "Are women harassed on the Net?" Reporters called from all over the country with basically the same question. I told them all: your question is ill-formed. "The Net" is not one thing. It's like asking: "Are women comfortable in bars?" That's a silly question. Which woman? Which bar? The summer I was 18, I was the computer counselor at a summer camp. After the campers were asleep, the counselors were allowed out, and would go bar hopping. First everyone would go to Maria's, an Italian restaurant with red-and-white-checked table cloths. Maria welcomed everyone from behind the bar, greeting regular customers by name. She always brought us free garlic bread. Next we'd go to the Sandpiper, a disco with good dance music. The Sandpiper seemed excitingly adultit was a little scary at first, but then I loved it. Next, we went to the Sportsman, a leather motorcycle bar that I found absolutely terrifying. Huge, bearded men bulging out of their leather vests and pants leered at me. I hid in the corner and tried not to make eye contact with anyone, hoping my friends would get tired soon and give me a ride back to camp.
