Extractions: According to popular conception, working-class women in the United States are part of the "silent majority." But during the 1970s and early 1980s these women have been far from silent. Speaking out both individually and collectively, they have staked new political ground for themselves and their families. Drawing on case studies of community and workplace organizing, these original essays redefine our notions of "the political" and address a wide range of topics, including the creation and reform of unions, domestic service, street vending, working-class education, health care, and social services. The contributors have focused on working-class women from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds employed in a wide variety of jobs.

Connecticut College - Gender And Women's Studies Interdisciplinary transnational course of study designed to help students understand the ways in which sexual politics shapes social experience. http://camel2.conncoll.edu/academics/departments/gws/
Extractions: Interdisciplinary Study Away ... Contact Physicist, environmentalist and feminist scholar and activist Vandana Shiva, April, 2005 on sustainability, biodiversity and human rights. Gender and Women's Studies, an interdisciplinary transnational course of study, is designed to help students understand the ways in which sexual politics shapes social experience. We examine the nuanced historical processes through which women and men live out gender; the set of institutional and ideological practices that shape it; and the concrete processes and political movements through which inequities are transformed. Employing a transnational, comparative approach, students explore how gender intersects with issues of nation, culture, religion, sexuality, class, and race. Gender and Women's Studies prepares students to utilize feminist methodologies and approaches to interrogate other disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and arts.

Women, Islam And The State This paper seeks to examine the position and status of women in Bangladesh in relation to the interplay of religion and politics. http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/southasia/Tazeen.html
Extractions: University of North London Introduction After a period of political oblivion, the religious right in Bangladesh has not only made electoral gains but also successfully engaged in political alliances which allowed it to campaign virtually unopposed for an Islamic state where women could step outdoors only at their own peril. The many speared campaign has targetted development organisations which empower women through offering loans, skills training and employment opportunities. It is argued that female emancipation is not part of God's plan. Schools for girls have not remained unscathed. Women who dared to challenge existing social codes, alongside those who did not have been equally victims of violence and moral censure. These activities are at odds with the development objectives of the state. Yet, at times the role of the state has been an ambivalent one. Where decisive action could have stemmed the tide, none was forthcoming. This paper seeks to examine the position and status of women in Bangladesh in relation to the interplay of religion and politics. In order to do so it will first present some relevant backgound information on the history of the country and recent data on socio-economic indicators of female status. A discussion of the nature of women's subordination and resistance follows: the women's movement, though weak, has achieved some success in negotiating policy changes at the state level. Therefore, its interactions with the state merits some attention. An assumption shared by feminist scholars is that the postcolonial state reinforces gender inequality and sanctions injustices against women.

Extractions: The Second Republic (1931-1936) generated important legislative work and women were granted many new rights of which they had been hitherto deprived. The 1931 Constitution granted suffrage to women. Spain was therefore one of the first among South European states to enfranchise women. In 1932, laws on divorce and civil marriage were passed. Women were accorded full legal status ; abortion was legalised, the crime of adultery was abolished and legal measures ensuring women's equal access to the labour market were taken. Franco's dictatorship tolled the knell of all those democratic rights . The Catholic national state which came into power after the defeat of the Republicans was eager to restrict women to the home and confine them to the private sphere. The Catholic Church ethics and its influence upon education and society at large worked with the same objective. One should bear in mind that this social pattern took place against a background of severe repression of all democratic trends. During this period, the law served that purpose. Numerous republican and democratic laws were abolished, like the laws on civil marriage and divorce. Abortion was severely punished. Women's legal ability was greatly restricted, and subjected to the authority of the father or the husband. During the period of transition to democracy (1975-1978), political reforms paved the way for the first democratic elections in June 1977. Women's legal ability was restored and extended : free and equal access to work and the right to hire were recognised to women. This period also saw the revival of women's liberation movements with their specific cultural means of expression (magazines, bookstores, editorials...). The legalisation of political parties and trade unions opened up a controversial debate amongst feminists on the question of whether the women's liberation movement should become involved in the larger democratic strategy of the parties or remain independent.

Women Against Fundamentalisms women and the politics of fundamentalism in Iran. Journal no.5 1994. pp1520. Haleh Afshar examines what Islamic fundamentalism means to women who choose to http://waf.gn.apc.org/j5p15.htm
Extractions: Women and the politics of fundamentalism in Iran Journal no.5 1994. pp15-20. Haleh Afshar examines what Islamic fundamentalism means to women who choose to adopt it and how, if at all it could be used as a means for political struggles. The intention is to move away from the usual condemnatory approach to Islamic fundamentalism and consider it in the light of the views and activities of its adherents. WHAT IS FUNDAMENTALISM? Fundamentalism has for long been associated with greater or lesser degrees of oppression of women. Given the rise of fundamentalism and the decision of many women to consciously reject feminisms of various kind and adopt the creed makes it important for some of us to consider what it is and why so many have chosen it. It may be worth while to stand back and consider the reasons that many Muslim women have offered for adopting Islamic fundamentalism and "returning to the source" both in the UK and elsewhere. Part of the problem of understanding fundamentalism has been in terms of definitions and terminology. Muslims themselves do not use the terms fundamentalist at all; the twentieth century Islamists argue that they are revivalists, and are returning to sources of Islam to regain a purified vision, long since lost in the mire of worldly governments. Shiias, who are a minority school of Islam, but form 98 per cent of the Iranian population, have for long seen themselves as the guardians of the poor, the dispossessed and those trampled on by unjust governments.
