Extractions: Abstract Resolutions and reports from the Committee on Schools to the Common Council, 1866-1932. The materials are arranged in four subseries: GENERAL RESOLUTIONS, NORTH SIDE SCHOOLS, SOUTH SIDE SCHOOLS, and SPECIAL TOPICS. Resolutions dealing with schools in general (usually multiple schools) were filed chronologically in a GENERAL subseries, along with some historical information on the schools in La Crosse, including buildings that were rented for school purposes. North Side and South Side schools were separated into their appropriate subseries, NORTH SIDE SCHOOLS and SOUTH SIDE SCHOOLS. All of the old school buildings from the North and South sides are well represented, except for the branch schools which often were one to four room wooden buildings. The final subseries, SPECIAL TOPICS, includes resolutions about Industrial Education, the Normal School (later called State Teachers College, and finally University of Wisconsin-La Crosse), School for the Deaf, Teachers Salaries, and Vocational School (originally associated with the high schools; later independent from the city public school system and called Coleman Institute, then known as Western Wisconsin Technical Institute, and finally named Western Wisconsin Technical College).
Extractions: Traditional colleges and universities offer two and four year degree programs. Examples of traditional colleges and universities include Harvard University, New York University, University of Texas, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Bard College, and Middlebury College. Generally, these colleges require completion of a liberal arts core curriculum in addition to coursework in a major field of study, and offer majors in subject areas (English, history, philosophy, Spanish, etc.) which may not be designed to prepare students for a particular career as well as majors (accounting, business, pre-law, education, journalism, engineering) which are career specific. Extractions: Vocational-Technical Education Carl Perkins Directory Hot Topics Resouces ... Upcoming Events Carl Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology Education Act (CPA) Grants: CPA is designed to improve and promote high school (grades 7-12) vocational education programs to train young people for employment, and/or to better prepare students for post-secondary training opportunities (colleges, trade schools, and/or universities). Usually, this involves Agriculture Education, Business Education, Family and Consumer Education, and Technology Education (formerly known as Industrial Arts). Other programs covered in vocational education are career education, guidance, work-based learning, computer-related instruction, applied/integrated instruction, marketing education, health occupations, and wage-earning home economics. The federal government funds the program through DPI. Every district is allocated an amount based on school and "special populations" counts. Special populations includes students in such categories as ethnic minorities, academically disadvantaged (less than a "C" average), economically disadvantaged, and students with disabilities. Districts with allocations above $15,000 may apply directly to the DPI provided they have a Local Vocational Education Coordinator to oversee the funds. Those schools who have less than a $15,000 allocation must enter into a consortium of schools large enough to at least equal the $15,000 threshold. Often, a CESA is used as fiscal agent for consortiums. The CESA 8 LVEC provides consortiums with assistance in planning, purchasing, program monitoring, evaluation, and fiscal management. LVEC also assists in staff development and keeps schools updated on vocational issues.
