Extractions: T he Wisconsin Academy Staff Development Initiative (WASDI) provides state-of-the-art staff development for teachers throughout Wisconsin, primarily in the areas of mathematics and science. WASDI has functioned in a highly successful manner operating on two fronts. First, the project develops teacher leaders and school based mentors who work to improve mathematics and science learning in their own classrooms, schools, districts, and the wider profession. Secondly, WASDI has developed a statewide series of summer academies for teachers presenting fifteen one-week sets of workshops in fourteen sites around Wisconsin. The project began in 1994 with a $6 million grant over five years from the National Science Foundation. Subsequently, it has received four, one-year grants administered by the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Education , a second four year grant from the National Science Foundation, and several Mathematics/Science Partnership Grants from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. These grants have allowed the project to now be in its eleventh year of serving the Wisconsin education community.

If it isnt good, then why waste the time, energy, and money forcing teachers, administrators, and other staff to take part in at least some of it? Professional development generally refers to ongoing learning opportunities available to teachers, and other education personnel, through their schools and districts. Effective professional development is seen as increasingly vital to school success and teacher satisfaction. With schools today facing an array of complex challenges - from working with an increasingly diverse population of students, to integrating new technology in the classroom, to meeting rigorous academic standards and goals observers have stressed the need for teachers to be able to enhance and build on their instructional knowledge.
