And it is no coincidence that he wrote them in these years, from 1890 to the 1920s, years in which children's literature was most heavily invested in denial. Extractions: Literary Influences of Syd Barrett Part of what makes Barrett and his music so unique was the amazing variety of influences he drew upon. Not only from music, but in literature as well. Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows' was most likely Syd Barrett's most influential childhood book. The title of the Pink Floyd's 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn' was drawn from Chapter VII of this book. This book is perhaps the very touchstone for understanding the intricacies of Barrett's work, and some of the byzantine mechanisms of his creativity. The characters, the duality between the frightening Wild Wood and the idyllic river, and the lush language Grahame utilises are all key Barrett influences. A must-read for all Barrett enthusiasts. Hilaire Belloc , a famous stodgy old man of letters, wrote a lot of books, essays and poems during his life, but he is perhaps best known for his children's book, 'Cautionary Verses', published in 1907. It's a strange book, as only those classic English children's books can be. The stories are little rhymes meant to frighten children into obedience. The things that happen to these kids for disobeying are really horrific. They get eaten by tigers, burnt alive, die of terrible illnesses or get thumped behind the ear....all for misbehaving. The opening story, 'Jim Who Ran Away From His Nurse and was Eaten by a Lion' provided 'Matilda Mother' with its original lyrics. 'Matilda', another story from the book, provided the title of the song. Cliff Jones, author of 'Echoes: The Story Behind Every Pink Floyd Song' noted that when Syd and the Floyd used to perform 'Matilda Mother' in Autumn 1966 at places like the All Saint's Hall, the song began like this:

Posted by saecker at 06:29 AM Permalink Nothing to Lose by Alex Flinn (0-06-051750-6) This novel is being lauded as one of the top ones this year, and I can certainly see why. Through a series of flashbacks, readers discover Michael's story, the story behind his stepfather's murder. The flashbacks reveal the beatings his mother took, the helplessness Michael felt, and the reason why he ran away to work at a carnival. But now Michael is back in his home town where his mother is on trial for his stepfather's murder. He has the choice to run again or to stay. Michael is a very believable and vivid character. The abuse is portrayed through his eyes, and readers understand his powerlessness and fear. Very well done and real. Recommend this one to teenage boys. They will enjoy that Michael is a football player who faces a lot more than quarterback issues.

Extractions: Free Course: Getting a Grip on Children's Lit Lesson 4: The First Years of School- 4-6 Years Old Heroes and books for boys Humor: Who doesnt like to laugh? The more outrageous and absurd the book, the more enjoyable it is. One great example is The Dumb Bunnies by Sue Denim. This family of bunnies couldnt be more topsy-turvy! They hang Christmas Stockings for Halloween, put ketchup on watermelon, and go roller-skating in the lake. This book is really goofy, but little boys enjoy it immensely. Other great choices include George and Martha by James Marshall, and any of the fractured fairy tales mentioned in the previous section. Action/Adventure: Boys love stories with a heroic character who does something adventurous and fantastic. Whether it be facing monsters, or seeking buried treasure, boys love an exciting story. Is there something happening in the book? Is it exciting and attention grabbing? One of my favorites is an old classic called Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain by Edward Ardizzone. Tim has always dreamt of being a sailor, and when the opportunity arises to stowaway on a steamer ship, he jumps at it. What ensues is the adventure of a lifetime for Tim, stormy seas and sinking ship included. There were a whole series of Little Tim books, but this is one of the few titles currently in print.

Teaching Children To Appreciate Literature This includes acquaintance with works that Americans are often assumed to haveread as children, such as, say, winnie the pooh, Wind in the Willows, http://www.vtaide.com/png/ERIC/Appreciate-Lit.htm
Extractions: Appreciation may be explained as the capacity to understand, learn from, and above all enjoy literary works. It involves the ability to read and respond creatively, sharing the author's role by drawing on one's own imagination and experience. The text enters the reader as the reader enters the text. Their worlds are joined. Two basic approaches to teaching literature at any level are the "structural" (traditional literary analysis) and the "reader response" approaches. While they may be viewed as opposites, they are more productively regarded as complementary. Structural analysis provides the terms and concepts that help readers interpret and discuss literature, while reader response emphasizes the integrated experience an individual has with a text, with the reader's personal response having primacy over formal knowledge of textual characteristics. A strong case can be made for beginning with reader response. If done without first establishing the personal relationship by which the reader breathes life into a text, formal analysis is likely to resemble an autopsy.
