The Babylonians and Chinese were using wind power to pump water for irrigating crops 4,000 years ago, and sailing boats were around long before that. Wind power was used in the Middle Ages, in Europe, to grind corn, which is where the term "windmill" comes from. How it works The Sun heats our atmosphere unevenly, so some patches become warmer than others. These warm patches of air rise, other air blows in to replace them - and we feel a wind blowing. We can use the energy in the wind by building a tall tower, with a large propellor on the top.

Extractions: The purpose of this project, also known as Project 3 of the Hawaii Energy Strategy (1995), was to produce a comprehensive assessment of Hawaii's renewable energy resources (wind, solar, biomass, hydroelectric, ocean thermal energy conversion [OTEC], geothermal, and wave energy) and a long-range development strategy. The project consisted of three parts, and produced three reports: Renewable Energy Resource Assessment Plan The report on Phase I summarized the activities involved in creating the resource assessment plan, including determining constraints and requirements, identifying potential project sites, analyzing existing utility infrastructure, identifying existing monitoring sites, and screening potential sites. New solar and wind monitoring sites were recommended and instrumented for collection of additional data. Development of Renewable Energy Resource Supply Curves The Phase II report compiled cost and performance data on current and future renewable energy conversion systems, analyzed and reduced existing data on available resources, and presented the renewable energy resource supply curves which were developed. A computer model was developed to allow comparison of cost information on renewable resources with various alternatives.

Extractions: The Iowa Stored Energy Plant project proposes to use wind energy to compress air for storage in an underground aquifer. When generation is needed, the compressed air would be released to drive natural gas-fired combustion turbines. Air in its rapidly moving form, otherwise known as wind, has become an increasingly important part of Iowa's energy mix, and it may become even more important if the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities succeeds in launching an innovative wind-powered compressed air energy storage facility project. CAES technology uses off-peak power to store compressed air in an underground aquifer for use in later generation. A joint project of IAMU and a steering committee of municipal utility managers, the Iowa Stored Energy Plant would use wind power to compress the air and an underground aquifer to store it. "Adding renewable energy and a different type of storage space to the equation has the potential to make an already effective technology even more attractive," said IAMU Energy Services Coordinator
