Press release Wind Directions Viewpoint Wind Directions Focus on Spain 18-Aug-2005 50 GW in 2005: Global wind market will double to A$25 billion per year by 2010 - Asia-Pacific partnership opportunity to accelerate wind energy deployment The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) today released a communiqué calling on the Australian Government to use the opportunity of the new Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate to further develop wind energy across the region. "Globally the wind industry is a mainstream energy technology, which has now reached 50,000 megawatts (MW) of installation worldwide. This is more than the total installed capacity of all the power in Australia. The industry employs around 100,000 people, and the value of global installations was worth A$13 billion last year alone, which will increase to A$25 billion by 2010" said Professor Arthouros Zervos, President of GWEC.

    Extractions: Nova Scotia Wind Energy Project (NSWEP) A growing body of scientific research indicates that the combustion of fossil fuels produces greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, which are contributing to climate change. Many coastal regions, including almost all of Nova Scotia, will be particularly vulnerable to some of the predicted effects of climate change, notably sea-level rise and extreme weather events. A rise of less than a metre coupled with high tides and extreme weather events could severely disrupt the lives of many people living in low-lying communities along the Atlantic coast, the Bras d'Or Lakes and the Bay of Fundy. In December 1997, at the Third Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Kyoto, Japan, the Canadian Federal government set a greenhouse gas target of 6% reduction relative to 1990 levels by the years 2008-2012. To help Canadians reach this target, the Federal government, in its 1998-99 budget, established the $150 million Climate Change Action Fund (CCAF). One of the objectives of CCAF is to provide Canadians with information on actions that they can take to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
