SOULEYES Magazine - Conversations - Ken Light I was in west virginia photographing this past summer when a devastating flood design than a magazine or newspaper, which are dependent on advertising. http://www.souleyes.com/conversations/kenlight.html
Extractions: Editor Q - You were a speaker at the 2001 Atlanta Photojournalism Conference. One of your comments that really caught my ear was that, when you're working, typically you are the only photographer on the scene. That is very different from the daily experience of most newspaper photographers. How does that come about? A - The subjects I have chosen in my 30 years as a documentary photographer seem to be those that others have ignored, or have given very short attention to. I am not photographing news events nor is my image making beholden to these types of events. I am interested in a larger view. This has always meant that rarely are there other photographers around when I work. It is a conscious effort to step outside the general daily focus that newspapers and magazines usually have and also is the by product of my subjects and interests. I was in West Virginia photographing this past summer when a devastating flood destroyed some of the communities I was working in. Rather than being excited about shooting such a catastrophic event, I was really upset that this "news event" had disrupted my project. I was not there to cover a flood, but to document people and their communities and lives. Of course, newspaper photographers showed up from the local and national papers and CNN and other TV stations came and covered the devastation and left. Q - What do you call yourself? Photojournalist, documentarian, visual journalist?

After years of working with Mel, I knew that within an hour, he would be hard at work in the darkroom of his photography studio on Bland Street in Bluefield. Mel,s Ford Taurus station wagon with the distinctive "Cub" license plate seems like its almost always parked in front of the well-kept Grubb Photo Service building.
