Extractions: CET Tue Jun 1 2005 The Center for Educational Technologies helped coordinate the distribution and collection of a recent survey designed to better understand how residents of a group of southern West Virginia counties view their surrounding areas with regard to the production and impoundment of coal. Jodie Hoover, a geographic information system (GIS) analyst at the Center for Educational Technologies, created maps of Southern West Virginia, along with a suggested itinerary for the college students who distributed and collected the surveys. The maps highlighted areas affected by impoundment dams. The survey was distributed in late March and early April to dozens of towns in Wyoming, Mingo, Boone and Logan counties. Wheeling Jesuit University students joined students from Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia universities in the research gathering process for the survey, an initiative of the Coal Impoundment Project. This project is a collaborative effort led by Wheeling Jesuit University, the Center for Educational Technologies, and the National Technology Transfer Center on campus. The students conducted field research and administered the study to residents in selected communities. "This opportunity allowed these students to take an active role in the research and work done at the Center for Educational Technologies and National Technology Transfer Center," McAteer said.
