Extractions: We worked in collaboration with the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses, the West Virginia School Nurses Association, parents, county boards of education, superintendents, building administrators, physicians and West Virginia Department of Education staff in an effort to develop a policy that our entire state could embrace, said WVBOE Vice President Barbara Fish. While full consensus was never reached, we believe Policy 2422.8 follows the letter of the law and is in the best interest of the children. The Medication Administration Committee looked at the laws and policies regarding school nurses and their licensure and determined that no law or policy specifies that only school nurses may administer non-prescription medications. As a result, the Committee recommended taking this responsibility from nurses in order to safeguard their nursing licenses. This new policy places the responsibility for administering non-prescription medication with the building administrator.

Extractions: Dr. Stewart has done wonderful things for education in our state, and we are so grateful for his guidance and commitment, said West Virginia Board of Education President Barbara Fish. Our state assessment data speaks volumes to the quality of his leadership and dedication to the students of West Virginia. Since Superintendent Stewart has been at the helm of the Department of Education, student reading and math assessment scores, SAT and ACT scores, and overall student achievement have continually improved. Education has been good to me, both professionally and personally, said Stewart. In recent years, there have been some monumental changes in the way we educate our students. Teachers, county administrators and Department of Education staff have faced educational challenges and embraced better learning. As a result, student achievement levels for all students have never been higher. I am proud of the strides our state has made in the educational arena. However, at this time, I know I must move into another phase of my life. It is simply time.

Extractions: Charleston, W.Va. - The West Virginia Board of Education received a report regarding student success in West Virginia High Schools during its July meeting in Charleston. A task force charged with reviewing the states high schools met earlier this year to make recommendations as to how to improve various areas of high school education. The plan proposed to the State Board by the task force aims to improve high school curriculum, instruction school effectiveness and student, family and community support. As part of the plan, the group recommends redesigning the West Virginia high school experience by increasing learning opportunities for students. It further recommends improving student transitioning from middle grades to high school and from high school to post secondary education and or work. Other recommendations include supporting West Virginia student success with excellent teachers and principals and increasing the value of the West Virginia high school diploma. The report also lists goals the task force set for high schools. The goals, which are based on the Framework for High Performing Schools, include students academic and technical performance equaling or exceeding national averages; providing students the opportunity to complete accelerated courses and graduate with college credit and/or workplace credentials; educating students with highly qualified personnel who effectively use research-based instructional strategies; and involving students families and communities to assure that all schools have strategies for providing support to address social, emotional and academic needs, among others.
