Our history actually predates 1867 because Morgantown was home to several private seminaries and academies (nineteenth-century versions of high schools) whose histories are linked to WVUs. Then, in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act, offering land grants of 30,000 acres of federally-owed land to each state that agreed to establish a college to teach agriculture and the "mechanic arts" (engineering). The State of West Virginia was formed the following year and, shortly thereafter, the states legislature accepted the terms of the Morrill Act to raise the money to start the new land-grant college they called the Agricultural College of West Virginia. In 1868, the schools name was changed to West Virginia University. WVU, the Early Days WVU opened in September 1867 as an all-male, all-white institution with six faculty members, six college students, and 118 Preparatory Department students (high school-aged students who were preparing to do college work). WVU used the former Woodburn Female Seminary building, where Woodburn Hall is now, as the first residence hall, and our first president, Alexander Martin, lived there with the students. "Woodburn" means "streamlet in a shady glen" and comes from Sir Walter Scotts Guy Mannering

The West Virginia Hills Droozy loved west virginia, especially the hills which she, her sister and Herr Kübler The Broken Leg boarding School The American Calendar http://www.jbuff.com/droozy/west_virginia_hills.htm
Extractions: Droozy loved West Virginia, especially the hills which she, her sister and brother would explore. The town of Weirton was the first place where Papa found work. He had been sent there by the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. This was an organization that helped refugees find a way to support themselves. Droozy would wander into the hills and admire the beauty of the trees, the many flowers that would peek out of the ground. They were yellow, red and blue. She liked the steel blue blossoms that marked the fall season and the daffodils that announced the spring, the lilac that smelled so divine and even the dandelions that people called weeds. Droozy would watch the birds flying in perfect symmetry across the blue horizon. She would listen as the crickets chirped in the grass and every so often she would catch one and hold it in her hands for a few seconds until it would hop away very gracefully. She would climb the hills and sit among the plants and flowers and daydream. When September rolled around the Labor Day holiday was celebrated with a pageant - a big celebration - which took place in the towns football field. The band would play John Phillip Sousas Stars and Stripes Forever. This would thrill Droozy; it would make her feel so patriotic. She would clap her hands, tap her feet to the music and hum along with the crowd. She would look up at the surrounding hills and would think of the beautiful State song which to her described the glory of the State in which Droozy had found a new beginning. She would often sing this song while lying on her back in those mountains watching the sun make patterns: Oh the West Virginia Hills, how majestic and how grand, with their summits bathed in glory, like our prince Emanuels land. Is it any wonder then that my heart with rapture fills, as I stand once more with loved ones on those West Virginia Hills. Oh the hills, beautiful hills, how I love those West Virginia hills.

The Short Unhappy Life Of William Seymour Douglass I spent my evenings with good young men, at a boarding school, William Seymour Douglass said he was born and raised in west virginia which is somewhat http://www.wvculture.org/history/wvhs1032.html
Extractions: Quarterly Membership Information Frederick Nolan is a historian who lives in Chalfont, St. Giles, England. This is the first of two parts of this article. The second will be continued in the January issue of the Quarterly. Seymour Douglass story is a veritable paradigm of those oral fables so beloved of Victorian times, that of the young man who forsakes the paths of righteousness early in life, and pays the bitterest of prices. How bitter may be judged from a letter he wrote from prison to his nephew Maurice shortly after his second incarceration in the State Penitentiary in 1886. In it, Seymour exhorted that young man not to fall prey to the same temptations he had, and recalled how the "roots of evil crept into my heart and ruined my life" during his boyhood. I was not content to spend my evenings till bedtime with my mother s children, around a happy fireside and the purity of that home circle. But I would run off to the next door neighbor, when they would lend me a pipe to smoke, and gave me tobacco to chew. And after these bad habits had got a good hold upon me, these people told me I must get them so and so, in return for the tobacco I used. In fact, I was set to stealing sugar, coffee, vegetables, meat and some little amount of nearly everything my mother had. This life of guilt and shame was carried on for a long time, and my mother never had a thought that she was being robbed, and that too, by

Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII.
