The philosophy and intent of this and most subsequent schools was to assimilate Indian children by removing them from their native cultures, and teaching them the manners, dress, and job skills that were deemed important by the school founders and administrators. While boarding schools still exist, most had changed their practices of forced assimilation by the 1930s.

Our students take the Stanford Achievement, Woodcock-Johnson, Brown ADD scale, and other tests to determine his or hers level of learning disability. We use these results to prepare Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for each student. Our plan not only includes academic goals but also social and interpersonal ones as well. We educate the "whole child." Our student/teacher ratio is only six to one, so that each student receives plenty of individual attention. Our ADD - ADHD students are required to take classes in American and world history and language arts including English grammar and composition, literature and theater. The Cedars Academy offers art, music and physical education as well as classes in foreign language. Mathematics courses range from pre-algebra through calculus. Science is stressed with courses in earth science, biology, physics, nutrition, and chemistry. Generally students take five academic courses, with adjunct classes in the arts, music, and foreign language. Each student's Individual Educational Program (IEP) is designed to move the student forward and to fill in holes in their academic and developmental background. Daily homework assignments augment classroom presentation and materials. At least 1-1/2 to 2 hours of supervised homework is scheduled daily.

Under the plan, the International Society of Krishna Consciousness organization has filed for bankruptcy in Los Angeles while it determines how to compensate 535 former students who say they were abused in the 1970s and '80s by adults at boarding schools run by the society. The settlement covers abuses at Krishna temples and schools across the United States and India that resulted in a 2001 class-action lawsuit. Some Hare Krishna devotees and gurus, including at least one in Los Angeles, were subsequently convicted of child abuse, and others were barred from visiting temples, said Anuttama Dasa, spokesman for the society. The Krishnas also closed all the boarding schools in the United States, where much of the abuse allegedly occurred. Last week, the organization began paying off attorneys, accountants and others involved in the case, a first step in eventually making payments to the alleged victims.
