Bilingualism will be introduced at the earliest opportunity. The Authority will ensure that bilingual education, once started, will be maintained and developed as the children progress. Schools where Welsh is the main medium of instruction have been established within the Authority. In these schools English is introduced at Key Stage 2 (i.e. ages 8-11) All Wrexham County Borough Primary Schools will be bilingual though the degree of bilingualism may differ from area to area. Consequently, it will be the responsibility of the authority (in conjunction with the Head and the School Governors) to ensure that competent teachers are available in order that the proportion of time allocated to the teaching of both Welsh and English is in accordance with National Curriculum requirements. To preserve and ensure continuity with the primary schools, Welsh will be taught as a second language in all secondary schools where the main medium of instruction is English.

In the early part of the 1st millennium BC a powerful and brilliant society emerged in West Central Europe around the headwaters of the River Danube - these people were the Celts. By the 5th century BC the British Isles were Celtic with the existing native population being absorbed into the new culture. The Celtic language in the British Isles consisted of two distinct groups; Giodelic (Gaelic or Q-Celtic) and Brythonic (British or P-Celtic). Gaelic was spoken in Ireland, the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, and the Isle of Man. The rest of Britain including Wales spoke Brythonic. With the Roman Invasion in 43AD onwards, the Brythonic language survived alongside Latin, and some Latin words were added to the language.

Staff Celtic Studies The Department of Welsh at Aberystwyth is one of the leading university centres in the British Isles for the study of Celtic languages, literatures and cultures. We offer an ambitious single honours degree scheme in Celtic Studies under the direction of Professor Patrick Sims-Williams, F.B.A. This scheme offers students the opportunity to study Irish as well as Welsh, and Scottish Gaelic and Breton may also be selected as options. The Celtic Studies degree course extends over four years. Students will usually study Irish or Breton abroad at one of the universities in Ireland and Brittany which are linked with Aberystwyth in the SOCRATES programme funded by the European Community. Although study abroad is the norm, an exemption can be allowed in certain cases (e.e. to students who come from Ireland or Brittany), although this will not necessarily reduce the length of the course. Students' period of study abroad is normally planned at the end of their first year. The Celtic Studies modules taught through the medium of English are listed below.
