Extractions: This is an archive copy of a document originally located at http://www.activeaustralia.org/women/olym_hist.htm The 20th May 2000 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. It also marks the centenary of womens participation in the modern Olympics. Three events were available for women at the 1900 Olympic Games: golf, tennis and yachting. When the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 women had no part in the competition. In fact, the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin had said on several occasions that the Olympics were no place for women. He felt that rather than seek records for herself, a womans greatest achievement was to encourage her sons to excel. Women had to work to gain a presence in the Olympic arena and force open the door to one sport after another. Swimming for women was included in the Games in 1912 and a limited program of track and field was added in 1928. Womens races longer than 200m were banned until 1960 when the 800m was reintroduced. The womens marathon was not added until 1984. In 1992 the 10,000m walk was introduced and recently, waterpolo which had been the domain of men since the Olympics first began was added to the 2000 Olympic Games program for women. Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history.

News of the record was broadcast but an International Weightlifting Federation official admitted "it was a big mistake".

Extractions: Weightlifting in the U. S. The man who did the most to revive American weightlifting after Windship's death was Alan Calvert. In 1893, when he was 18, Calvert saw a performance by Eugen Sandow at Columbian Exposition in Chicago and became a convert. Because it was hard to find equipment, Calvert in 1902 founded the Milo Barbell Company. He also began publishing a promotional pamphlet called Strength , which became a full-scale subscription magazine in 1914. Calvert sold both the business and the publication in 1919, but he continued to be involved with the editorial side of Strength during the early 1920s. He was one of the founders of the American Continental Weight-Lifters Association (ACWLA) in 1922, with George Jowett, who had become the editor of Strength , and Bernard Bernard, editor of Life and Health The first national championship was held in Los Angeles in 1924, using the same five lifts as in the Olympics that year. During the late 1920s, the ACWLA was challenged by the Association of Bar-Bell Men (ABBM). The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) took over control of the sport, holding its first national championship in 1929. The ACWLA and the ABBM both folded soon afterward.

Extractions: The people of Athens greeted the Games with great enthusiasm. There is no event that the Greek hosts wanted to win more than the marathon race, because of its historical significance. Spiridon Louis, a Greek shepherd set off from the city of Marathon (marathon was run from Marathon to Athens over the course covered by Greek hero Pheidippides in 490 B.C. after the battle with the Persians) and took the lead four kilometres from the finish line and, to the great joy of the 100,000 spectators, won the race by more than seven minutes. Alfréd Hajos (HUN-swimming) won the 100m and the 1,200m events. For the longer race, the swimmers were transported by boat and left to swim back to shore alone. According to Hajos, "I must say that I shivered at the thought of what would happen if I got a cramp from the cold water. My will to live completely overcame my desire to win". The Games of 1900 were held in Paris as part of the Exposition Universelle Internationale - the Paris World's Fair. The exposition organizers spread the events over five months and de-emphasized their Olympic status to such an extent that many athletes died without ever knowing that they had participated in the Olympics.
