Suggest a link As a sport, weightlifting's origins can be traced back to ancient Greek and Egyptian societies where stones and bags filled with sand were used to display strength. Surprisingly, while the top ancient Greek weightlifters were held in high esteem and evidence exists that weightlifting competitions occurred, the sport was not included in the ancient Olympic games . The first world weightlifting competition was held in London in 1891 and won by Edward Lawrence Levy . Five years later the modern Olympics began and weightlifting was included on the as one of nine events on the program. The original Olympic weightlifting competition was based on 2 lifts, the one-handed dumbbell lift and the two-handed barbell lift. Weightlifting was dropped from the Olympics in 1900, returned in 1904 and 1906 and then was dropped again. In 1920 it reappeared and has been included in every Olympics since. 1920 also marked the first time the competitors were divided into weight classes. Women got a late start in competitive weightlifting with their first world championship held in 1987. Women's weightlifting was added to the Olympics beginning in 2000

Extractions: Although weightlifting is a sport that can be traced back to the earliest of the Olympic Games, it is only in the post World War II years that it has been given prominence in the national press of this country. And this has mainly come about because a certain aspect of weightlifting, weight training, has received widespread publicity because of the beneficial effects that it has produced in almost every branch of sport. Today it is recognized that the successful athlete must have strength as well as skill and stamina. But it has taken our coaches a long time to appreciate that the quickest and surest way to strength in muscle and joint is to be found in applying principles similar to those used for many years by successful weightlifters. I will not develop this point now as I shall have much more to say about it later. But it might be recorded that legend has it that Milo of Crotona, an Olympic champion for no less than twenty-eight years, was the first 'scientific' weightlifter in that he progressed from strength to strength by regularly lifting a calf as it grew into a bull. That was in 684 BC and this principle of progressive weightlifting still applies today.

Olympic Rings The Olympic symbolfive interlocked ringsrepresents the union of the five original major continents (Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe) and the meeting of the athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games. The five colors of the rings from left to right are blue, black and red across the top and yellow and green along the bottom. The colors of the rings are thought to have been chosen because at least one of these colors can be found in the flag of every nation. Olympic Flag The Olympic Flag has a plain white background with no border. In the center are the five interlocked Olympic rings. The flag was presented by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1914 at the Olympic Congress is 1914, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of the International Olympic Committee. It was flown that year at Alexandria, Greece, but made its Olympic debut in 1920 at Antwerp. The "primary" Olympic flag was thus known as "the Antwerp flag." His time of 3 minutes 51.3 seconds, made on July 17, at Berkeley, Calif., smashed Michel Jazy's previous mark of 3 minutes 53.6 seconds by 2.3 seconds. He was timed at the quarter mile posts in 57.6 seconds, 1 minute 55.5 seconds, and 2 minutes 55.3 seconds. Ryun also set a world record in the half-mile of 1 minute 44.9 seconds, and a U.S. record in the two-mile of 8 minutes 25.2 seconds Only one other athlete, sprinter Tommy Smith of San Jose State College, seriously challenged Ryun's supremacy on the track. Smith set four world records at 200 meters and 220 yards. On May 7, he lowered the standard for the straightaway race from 20 seconds to 19.5 seconds, and on June 11 he ran around a full turn in 20 seconds to take .2 (two tenths) of a second off the world record. Both marks were set at 220 yards, thus automatically applying to the shorter 200-meter distance (218 yards 2 feet 2 inches). Smith also excelled as a member of the U.S. team that set a world record for the 1,600-meter relay with a clocking of 2 minutes 59.6 seconds. His 400-meter leg of the relay took only 43.8 seconds, at that time the fastest ever. Smith also set a world record of 44.5 seconds for 400 meters in 1967.

Extractions: Women's weightlifting made its first Olympic appearance in 2000. Both men and women must complete two different lifts in this event. In a "snatch lift", the barbell is pulled from the platform to above the head in one continuous motion. In a "clean-and-jerk" the lift is done in two motions. First, the bar is pulled up to the shoulders as the lifter goes into a squat and follows that with a burst into an upright position. Once there, with the bar resting on their chest, the lifter must extend his/her arms and raise the bar above their head and wait for the referee's signal. The maximum weights the lifter is able to successfully lift using both techniques are added together to determine the winner.

De Lima, who had been in the lead with about three miles to go, runs back onto the course, but falls behind about a mile later. He ends up with the bronze medal, and will also be awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal for "exceptional demonstration of fair play and Olympic values." Perhaps needless to say, Brazil appeals. In spite of last-minute construction, scoring controversies, and dozens of disqualifications for doping, the Athens Games are widely viewed as a triumph for the city, and for the Games.

It is considered the best weightlifting venue on the planet and is the first purpose-built weightlifting venue in Olympic history. Situated in the south-western part of the Attica region, the venue consists of a main gymnasium with supplementary areas for warming up, resting, changing and training as well as hostels for the athletes. It will hold more than 5,000 spectators. It was one of the first venues planned by Games organisers - a reflection of the popularity of the sport in Greece.
