Extractions: var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia water skiing, sport of riding on skis along the water's surface while being towed by a motorboat. It probably originated on the French Riviera in the early 1920s, and was known in the United States by 1927. The American Water Ski Association, founded in 1939, held the first national championships that year. In recreational water skiing, the type of ski, length of tow rope, and speed of the boat vary with individual taste. In championship competitions, skis of hickory, ash, fiberglass, or aluminum are used. They must be at least 39 in. (1 m) long and not more than about 9 in. (25 cm) wide. There are usually three events in water ski tournaments: slalom, jumping, and trick riding. In the slalom the skiers must ski outside each of a staggered series of buoys. In jumping, contestants are towed over an inclined wooden ramp about 21 ft (6 m) long and 6 ft (1.8 m) high; jumps of 150 ft (46 m) from the point of takeoff have been recorded. In trick riding, contestants choose their own routines, many of them remarkably intricate. The World Water Ski Union (founded 1949) sponsors biennial international tournaments. By Bruce Kistler and Robert Espeseth Would it surprise you to know that the National Water Ski Championships have been held in Illinois five out of the past seven years and the National Water Ski Show Championships twice in the past five years? It shouldn't. Illinois has taken in a big way to water skiing, a sport that has grown to involve some 15 million participants nationwide and one that has developed an amazing diversity of types. No longer limited to "two square-backed boards," today's water skier might just as likely be found riding a kneeboard (a short surfboard-like device) or "barefooting" with no skis at all! Many Illinoisans have taken up the thrill of tournament skiing, competing against one another in the slalom, trick and jumping events. Still others prefer putting on Cypress Gardens-style ski shows. Park and recreation professionals should get to know the skiers in their jurisdiction to develop a feel for their wants and needs, which can vary depending on whether their aspirations are simply to have fun or to become national champions. Two aspects of waterskiing on which the recreation professional can have a major impact are providing areas and facilities and instruction.
Water Skiing & Wakeboarding In The Adirondacks RECREATION. water skiing Wakeboarding in the Adirondacks Almost everybody has experienced or seen water skiing on a basic recreational level—going out http://www.adksportsfitness.com/back_issues/june2001/articles/waterfun.html
Extractions: From the time Ralph Samuelson strapped on the first water skis in 1922, watersports have increased in popularity. Originally an exhibition sport, water skiing became a competitive sport in 1939 with the development of the American Water Ski Association (USA Water Ski). Today there are almost 11 million water skiers in the United States alone, and thousands more learning each year. The slalom course contains six buoys on alternating sides that the skier must successfully go around while the boat stays on a straight path. The difficulty comes when the rope is shortened, then it is more challenging for the skier to wrap around the buoy. The shorter the rope, the faster you must travel to successfully get from one buoy to the next. The intense acceleration and rocket-like speeds that occur while chasing down the next buoy down are amazing. Wakeboarding Although water skiing and wakeboarding are the more popular activities, there are other water sports that will equally challenge you in the area of balance, edge control, speed, and physical demand. One example is barefooting: It has become a well-recognized sport since it started as a stunt in 1947. With the help of barefoot booms, padded wetsuits and other equipment, anybody can learn to barefoot ski.

Hunting Safety MetLife Boat Safety Tips Safety Tips for Water-skiing Water-skiing is an exciting and challenging sport. However, like all "fast-action" sports that are fun, it does possess an element of risk. Many skiers and boaters are not aware of the potential hazards of water-skiing and as a result, are hurt or even killed pursuing this recreational sport. Attention to hazards in the area where you are skiing is especially critical due to the ever growing number of boats out on the water. The Ski Area The size of the water area in which you intend to ski determines the number of boats and skiers that can operate within it at the same time. Each boat should be able to maintain a 200 foot wide "ski corridor" (100 feet on either side of the boat). The entire "skiing course" should be at least 2,000 - 3,000 feet long to avoid constant turning and risky maneuvering.

NQ Water has decided to allow the Townsville Water Ski Club to use the Ross River Dam on a trial basis starting from June 2001. The Club already uses the Dam for competition events for 12 weekends each year - this has been the case for many years. Six to 14 boats participate in these events, racing over either a 13.5 km or 5.3 km course. There has also been some limited use of the Dam for training by our world champions. Ross River Dam offers the only stretch of calm water suitable for long course events. This is particularly significant given the number of champion skiers based in the local area, including the state and national barefoot water ski champions, and the world disabled slalom and jump champion. For the period of the trial, Townsville Water Ski Club will be able to use a restricted area of Ross River Dam. An exclusion zone has been created from the spillway out to 500m. Non-members of the Townsville Water Ski Club will not have access to the Dam for water skiing until completion of the trial and installation of required infrastructure.
