Extractions: The Olympics are in full swing now and like many Americans I take great pride in watching our best athletes competing against the best from all over the world. Most of the competitors Ive seen there treat each other with so much respect that each seems in awe of the others abilities. The level of performance by these athletes in their chosen field is so far above what the average athlete can do we can only imagine the amount of time and training they have put forth. Most of us can make some comparisons and judgments as to the degree of difficulty and challenges in some of the sports involved in the Olympics, while some events are so obscure you wonder why theyre included at all. Why Waterskiing is not included still remains a mystery to most water skiers. It is just as demanding if not more so than many of the events taking place right now. Waterskiing is a popular world wide sport that has sanctioning bodies in most every country in the world. Each of the 3 main disciplines of water skiing has similarities to other sports in the Olympics. Trick skiing is similar to the balance beam in gymnastics, but the beam doesnt move. Jumping is similar to alpine ski jumping except for the added dynamics of the counter cut and high speeds on an unstable surface. Slalom is similar to several events but is also like nothing else in the fact that the speeds are as high as downhill skiing, the turns as quick as alpine slalom while the forces exerted on the body approach weight-lifting levels.

Extractions: An Extreme Sport! Barefoot waterskiing began in 1947, when A.G Hancock and Dick Pope jr. mastered the extreme sport for the first time. Until the late sixties and early seventies, barefoot waterskiing was only done by the most daring skiers, eventually more and more skiers began learning and experimenting with the sport. Barefooting has excelled since then and continues to become more popular and well known. Although, it is not yet an Olympic sport, there are numerous competitions held in Ontario and Canada during the season. During the ski season, Water Ski Canada (WSC, the governing body of the sport affiliated with Sport Canada) organizes and contributes to more than ten barefoot tournaments each year. These include Provincials, Regional, National and International Championships. Extractions: USA Water Ski Waterskiing's bid to be included in the 2004 Summer Olympic Game in Athens, Greece, was rejected today by the executive board of the International Olympic Committee, according to a report filed by wire services. Citing a need to stop the ever-increasing size of the Games, the executive board rejected waterskiing's bid while deciding to keep the recent additions of triathlon, trampolining and taekwondo. "There will be no new sports for the 2004 Games in Athens," said IOC director general Francois Carrard. "I 'm profoundly disappointed," said Andres Botero, president of the International Water Ski Federation. "I believe we did the right job. We developed our sport worldwide. I felt we deserved to be on the Olympic program." In addition to the IOC's desire to halt the growth of the Games, Botero also cited Athens' troubles as a possible reason waterskiing was not accepted. "We came out at the wrong moment when Athens was having organizational problems," he said. "Everything was going very well until Athens started to slow down. They're doing better now, but it was too late." "While the news we received today was certainly not what we were hoping for, we feel it was an accomplishment for the sport to even be considered for Olympic inclusion," said Steve McDermeit, USA Water Ski's executive director. "We would like to express our appreciation to the tens of thousands of people who supported our Olympic effort, in the United States as well as abroad, by donating their time, money and efforts to the cause."
