That's one of the scenarios being contemplated by the International Olympic Committee as it considers possible new sports for the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece. The IOC said Thursday it has received requests from more than a dozen recognized sports federations to be added to the Olympic program in Athens. The list includes parachuting, billiards, underwater swimming, roller skating and surfing. There are also several sports that have been lobbying for years: golf, ballroom dancing, bowling, rugby, squash and racquetball. And then there's the sport that is considered the favorite for becoming a new medal event in Athens: water skiing.

A national nonprofit, 501(c)(3), organization established in 1967 by disabled Vietnam veterans to serve the war injured. DS/USA now offers nationwide sports rehabilitation programs to anyone with a permanent disability. Activities include winter skiing, water sports, summer and winter competitions, fitness and special sports events. Participants include those with visual impairments, amputations, spinal cord injury, dwarfism, multiple sclerosis, head injury, cerebral palsy, and other neuromuscular and orthopedic conditions. Disabled Sports USA is a nation-wide network of community-based chapters offering a variety of recreation programs. Each chapter sets its own agenda and activities. These may include one or more of the following: snow skiing; water sports (such as water skiing, sailing, kayaking, and rafting); cycling; climbing; horseback riding; golf; and social activities. Rehabilitation professionals and even the Federal Government recognize the importance of sports and recreation in the successful rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities. When first faced with the reality of a disability, many experience a loss of confidence, depression, and believe their lives have ended. They are often alienated from family and friends because there are no shared positive experiences. Sports and recreation offers the opportunity to achieve success in a very short time period; to use this success to build self-confidence and focus on possibilities instead of dwelling on what can no longer be done. The ability to participate in a sport, such as cycling; skiing; and sailing, to name a few, provides the opportunity to reunite with family and friends in a shared activity.
Extractions: ASSOCIATED PRESS 9:58 a.m. September 22, 2004 The International Olympic Committee said Wednesday it notified those five sports' governing bodies that they will be "studied further" as part of a review of the Summer Games' competition schedule. The IOC is assessing the 28 sports on the program of last month's Athens Olympics to determine whether changes should be made. IOC president Jacques Rogge repeatedly has said that sports only will be added if others are dropped. The maximum will stay at 28 sports, with around 10,500 athletes. In Athens, the IOC formally accepted the criteria for judging which sports should be on the program. Among the key points are global participation, spectator attendance, media interest, the sport's anti-doping policies, and whether the sport features the world's best athletes in the Olympics. Removal of a sport requires a vote of the full IOC membership. The last sport dropped from the Summer Olympics was polo in 1936.

Extractions: Water Skiing is a modern sport practiced world-wide with approximately 30 million participants on a recreational basis. Over 75 countries have formal Water Ski Federations organized to have competitions. Our sport offers high energy, high power, and high speed all of which televises well into an exciting presentation. Our athletes are attractive and well conditioned as well as clearly performing athletic moves that require speed, strength, and agility. Each event in a water ski competition requires different skills. Figure skiing requires speed, grace, and agility. Slalom requires strength, timing, and rhythm. Jump requires power, timing and courage. Each event is unique in its presentation of the athlete's skills. The judging of each event is based on objective, easily understood criteria. In slalom, the score is strictly a count of the buoys that the competitor skies around. In figures, the judges only have to decide if each figure was done or not. The is no type of form subjectivity. In jump, only the distance is measured. The format of a Water Ski competition lends itself to an Olympic style competition of preliminaries and finals without burdening the event with a huge number of athletes. In the Pan Am Games, the contest was decided with fewer than 50 competitors.
