WWU Mens Water Polo that water polo was the first team sport added to the Modern olympic Games? Not until the 1950s did water polo become a popular and accepted sport http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~wpolo/fun.html
Extractions: Eric Williams Did you know...? A brief look at the history of water polo. As swimming became a popular recreation in England during the 1860s and 1870s, several water sports were developed roughly based on land sports. Among them were water football (or soccer), water rugby, water handball, and water polo, in which players rode on floating barrels, painted to look like horses, and struck the ball with a stick. As played in England, the object of the game of water rugby was for a player to touch the ball, with both hands, at the goal end of the pool. Not only were holding and sinking legal, but so were the 'jujitsu toe hold and 'back strangle hold.' The main attraction of this version of the sport for spectators was the violence and mayhem, although it was a spectacular game that featured plays like the 'flying salmon,' where the player with the ball could leap 15 feet through the air, from the backs of his teammates, to score a goal over top of the defenders. -Did you know that water polo originally had the goaltender standing on the pool deck?

W X Y Z Water polo The game is divided into four quarters, each of seven minutes but the game clock is stopped when the ball is not 'in play' e.g. between a goal being scored and the re-start. This causes the average quarter to last around 12 minutes 'real time'. A team may not have possession of the ball for longer than 35 seconds without shooting for the goal or an opponent being ejected - after this time, possession passes to the other team. However if a team shoots the ball within the alloted 35 seconds, and regains control of the ball, the shot clock is reset to 35 seconds. One player on each team is designated the goalkeeper, and their primary job is to guard the goals, deflecting or catching any shots at goal. The goalkeeper is the only player who can touch the ball with both hands at any time, and the only player allowed to stand on the bottom (if the pool is shallow enough to allow this).

Thea de Wit has been the single most important individual responsible for the international acceptance of women's water polo as an Olympic sport. Her tenacity and persistence in promoting water polo for women on an international level, lead to the formation of FINAs and other committees which brought world-wide attention to the sport. She learned to swim at age eight when World War II began and the German Army occupied the Netherlands. It was another five years until the end of the war when Thea became a member of Hall of Fame Coach Jan Stender's team, Club ZV De Robben, in Hilversum, playing water polo and swimming. She swam breaststroke and freestyle, but specialized in long distance, swimming the three hour fifteen minute race in the sea at a temperature of 16 degrees celsius (62 degrees fahrenheit). Additionally a club water polo match was played each Saturday somewhere in the Netherlands and for many years her club was the best in the country. Following high school, she trained as a children's nanny, took courses in short hand and typing and qualified as a swimming teacher. In 1951, at age 18 she became a water polo referee officiating in tournaments throughout the country.

Extractions: A new medal means a new chance for gold for the United States. Women's water polo debuts at the Olympics with the United States one of the favorites in the six-team field. The Americans will be led by Coralie Simmons, Brenda Villa and Maureen O'Toole, considered by some the sport's greatest female player ever. In July, the United States went 6-0 at the Holiday Cup, which featured Olympic qualifiers Canada, Australia, Russia, Kazakstan and the Netherlands, the defending world champion. The U.S. men, called a medal contender by coach John Varges, will have a more difficult time. Their side of the draw includes Hungary, which has won six golds, as well as medal favorites Yugoslavia and Croatia. Australia and Italy are among the powers in the other half of the 12-team tournament. The American men are led by Chris Humbert, Tony Azevedo and Dan Hackett. The finer points Format: Each match is split into four seven-minute quarters. If a player is fouled within 4 meters of the goal, his team is awarded a penalty throw from 4 meters. In the round-robin tournament, teams receive 2 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. Preliminary games may end in a tie. Quarterfinal through final round matches use overtime if necessary to determine a winner. Overtime is sudden death.

Extractions: UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER 2:50 p.m. August 26, 2004 "Everybody knows who the best team in the world is," U.S. assistant coach Kyle Kopp said. "Ask anybody here." Well, maybe not Greece or Italy, which played for the gold Thursday night (Italy won in double overtime), but in the world water polo sorority, the United States certainly has been the dominant team since losing to Australia in the 2000 Olympic final. Trouble is, in the Olympics one loss in the medal round is all it takes to kill your chances for a gold. And Thursday, a second loss was lurking in the water like a hungry shark. After building leads of 4-0 and 5-1, the Americans gave up four straight Aussie goals and found themselves tied 5-5 late in the game. That's when a few of the U.S. players started getting worried. They'd let a similar lead get away against Italy. "It was sort of scary there toward the end," said Kelly Rulon. "I was scared."
Extractions: UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER 5:21 p.m. August 23, 2004 Still, if you cut Jesse Smith open, you'd count five rings of pain. "As an experience, I'm just lost in the moment," said a visibly frustrated Smith, who scored one of the U.S. goals in the team's third straight loss. "I just can't tell what the value is right now. This was pretty disappointing. "I didn't expect anything. But I knew more was possible. That makes me angry. We worked so hard." It wasn't. Instead, they were beaten by physicality and experience. "When they let go," said U.S. driver Brett Ormsby, "a lot of them go in." Unhappy with what he thought was the referees' reluctance to blow their whistles on the opponents, Rudic said his club "needs to become more physical." At the same time, the attempt to counter the ultra-aggressive Serbia and Montenegro game resulted in more U.S. penalties, and the winners scored on four of five power plays in the second half. Serbia and Montenegro leads the tournament in extra-man shooting percentage. In retrospect, the game that bothered the U.S. most in Athens was the 9-7 loss to Russia on Saturday, a game the Americans were given good chances of winning to enhance the possibility of making the quarterfinals.

Back to CAAWS June 17, 2000 13 is lucky for women's water polo team Montreal, - The puzzle has been solved. The International Olympic Committee finally rendered its decision to allow 13 players per team in the women's water polo tournament at the Sydney Games. Thirteen is also the number of players permitted under the international federation's rules. Thirteen is also the number players allowed per team in the men's Olympic tournament. The women, who had to fight hard to be admitted into the Olympic family, also had to battle for Olympic fairness in their own sport. Daniel Berthelette, the head coach of the women's national team, says the Australians must be credited for today's decision. "The Australians put a lot of pressure. Playing 11 players aside didn't favour them because they have heavy players who need to be frequently substituted." Berthelette said he won' t need to modify his preparation for the Olympics. "We always worked as if we would be 13 players in Sydney." Two players in particular now have all the motivation they need to continue training for the Olympics. Melissa Collins and Sue Gardiner have been informed by Berthelette they are assured a ticket for Sydney. "I'm very excited," said Gardiner. "Since the coach named the nine forwards (the goaltenders have not yet been selected) I found it hard to pursue the training. I even thought about quitting and going home to B.C. But now it's great to see me compensated for the all the efforts. And the girls reacted well to my selection. I feel I'm a full member of the team."
