Extractions: Water Polo Water polo originated in England during the 1870s, and as legend has it, the sport was developed by spirited young men who wanted to play rugby and cool off at the same time. It soon became popular in the United States and is now a major sport in a number of European countries. Its first appearance in the Olympics was at the 1900 Games where it was the first team sport admitted to the Olympics. Water polo has been played since the mid-nineteenth century and has been a part of the Olympic Games since 1900, when it became the first team sport added to the Olympic program. However, up to this point, only men have been able to play for the gold. Finally this September, women will make their first Olympic appearance. Six countries will compete to become the first gold medalist in women's water polo. This year's women's field will include teams from Australia, The Netherlands, Canada, Russia, Kazakhstan and the United States. The host Australians and the Netherlands had been considered favorites for the gold medal until the United States shocked everyone by winning the Holiday Cup, a pre-Olympic tournament in Los Alamitos, CA. According to USA Water Polo Director of Communications, Eric Velazquez , "the US destroyed everyone. Even though some of the scores were close, the other teams were just outmatched." With confidence and momentum going into the Games, the American women will be a force to be reckoned with. From 19-year-old

Extractions: The oldest Olympic team sport, water polo is physically and intellectually demanding and is a lot of fun to watch. During the Olympic tournament, water polo players will lose between five and ten pounds from swimming up to two miles per game, yet they can still shoot the ball at 40-50 m.p.h. without standing on the bottom of the pool! While high-school water polo is not as physical or demanding as Olympic water polo, the game is still very exciting and shares similarities with soccer, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, and rugby. Colored markers on the sides of the pool assist viewing the goal line (white), 2-meter line (red), 4-meter line (yellow), 7-meter line (green), and mid-pool line (white). These lines are important for several reasons, the two most important being that: defensive fouls committed closer to the goal are generally punished more severely and an offensive player may not go inside the 2-meter line without the ball or ahead of the ball line. When these ordinary fouls are committed within the 4-meter line, and in a situation in which had the foul not occurred the offense would likely have scored, the offense is awarded a penalty shot (like soccer). Other major fouls result in a 20-second ejection (like hockey) and include: holding, sinking, or pulling back on a player who has an offensive advantage but is not in control of the ball, intentionally splashing an opponent, interfering with a free throw, and kicking or striking an opponent. A player who commits three major fouls is excluded from the remainder of the game.
Extractions: He never lost his temper in play. There was not time for that. As the hole man, he had to wrestle the heavyweights, take blows and keep focused on the game. That was his strength to take a beating and hold his own. He was fouled up to 75 times in a game. He had a total of 100 stitches in his face. But he never relented, leading his team to great international achievements. During his career, Schroeder led the National Team to five FINA World Cups winning gold and silver medals, and four Pan American Games winning three golds and a silver medal. On the club level, he played for Industry Hills, Malibu, New York Athletic Club and Harvard, competing seven times on National Championship teams. He was voted National MVP six times and was an All-American fourteen times. He was twice named International Player of the Year and carried the U.S. flag at the 1988 Olympic Closing Ceremony. In 1984, he modeled for sculptor, Robert Graham as the bronze male torso sculpted for the Olympic Gateway at the entrance to the Los Angeles Coliseum at the Olympic Games. This headless figure represents all Olympic athletes.

The reason I chose to write about the sport the late Sun columnist Ted Reeve dubbed the "glub-glub" sport is that a major international water polo tournament will be played July 6 to 10 at the University of Toronto's Olympic-size pool. The World Water Polo League's one semi-final will be the first major international tournament since John Bitove Jr. organized the 1994 world basketball championship. (Small wonder that the IOC never awarded Canada the Summer Olympics). The other semi-final will be played at the same time in New York, with the final six teams three from each semi-final meeting in August in Belgrade for all the marbles ($500,000). Toronto fans will get to see the Athens Olympics silver medallist Serbia-Montenegro, as well as the national teams of Greece (fourth in Athens), Germany (fifth), Spain (sixth) and, of course, Canada. New York will host Hungary, Russia, Croatia, Italy and the US.
