Extractions: The topmost zone near the shore of a lake or pond is the littoral zone The near-surface open water surrounded by the littoral zone is the limnetic zone . The limnetic zone is well-lighted (like the littoral zone) and is dominated by plankton, both phytoplankton and zooplankton. Plankton are small organisms that play a crucial role in the food chain. Without aquatic plankton, there would be few living organisms in the world, and certainly no humans. A variety of freshwater fish also occupy this zone. profundal zone . This zone is much colder and denser than the other two. Little light penetrates all the way through the limnetic zone into the profundal zone. The fauna are heterotrophs, meaning that they eat dead organisms and use oxygen for cellular respiration. Streams and Rivers

Fossil records suggest that the elephant has some unlikely distant relatives, namely the small, rodentlike hyrax and the ungainly aquatic dugong. They all are thought to have evolved from a common stock related to ungulates. In East Africa many well-preserved fossil remains of earlier elephants have aided scientists in dating the archaeological sites of prehistoric man.

BBC - Science & Nature - UK Wildlife - Animal Homes Field Guide Find out how to recognise some animal homes. Look at a badger sett, a rabbitwarren, an otter holt and a water vole s riverbank home. http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/animals/wildbritain/field_guides/animal_homes.shtml
Extractions: Badger Badgers use a complex system of underground tunnels leading to multiple entrance holes, the number of which has no bearing on how many animals actually use the sett. If you find a badger sett, count the number of entrance holes that are well used. You can tell this if they have freshly dug earth leading from the inside of the hole to the outside. Also, see if you can find piles of bedding which have been left out by the badgers to dry. Fox Foxes make their dens almost anywhere. In urban areas they turn up in the most unlikely places, such as underneath portable dwellings or discarded builders' rubble. The traditional fox den is usually a solitary entrance hole that may originally have been made by a badger. A good way to tell if a fox is at home is to smell the air around the entrance hole. The harsh musty smell of a fox is often overpowering. It's not unusual for foxes to share a badger's sett, so don't be surprised if you see both species emerging from the same hole.

Their response is entirely unsatisfactory. Despite seeing our evidence of the inherent cruelty associated with duck farming, they still dismiss our concerns with corporate spin. The following are questions you may find useful to ask the Co-op: Why do the Co-op believe indoor sheds are an appropriate environment for an essentially wild bird? Exactly how many ducks do the Co-op guidelines allow to be kept in one shed, and what outside access is provided? Ask the Co-op what the mortality rate for ducks is at their suppliers. The industry norm is around 5%, which means that on average around a million ducks die on factory farms in the UK before they reach even 7 weeks old. Does this reflect high animal welfare standards? How much attention can one stockman give thousands of ducks per shed?

The purpose of this publication is to provide information on proper care and cookery of wild game so you can fully enjoy the fruits of the field. Undesirable strong flavors in the meat can be due to inadequate bleeding, delay or carelessness in dressing or failure to cool the carcass promptly. Extractions: Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. First, put yourself in the landscape, a rough, edgy country of sagebrush benchlands encircled by snowy plateaus and weathered mountain ridges, a land of big skies and sweeping vistas. The Yellowstone River carves a deep rift through it. The current is loaded with the melt of heavy snows. Tumbling headlong, fleeing the high country of its origin, the river rushes past the boundary of the national park that bears its name, hurrying down to the valley called Paradise, in Montana. Now, hear the thunderclap of high-powered rifles, of firing pins striking primer and igniting gunpowder to send copper-zinc-jacketed lead bullets flying towards their mark at more than 3,000 feet per second. Bam! The bullets punch through tough bison hides, splintering bones and puncturing organs as they mushroom and tear through the guts of the large, shaggy, brown creatures. Professional marksmen in the service of the people of Montana fire the bullets. With cool efficiency the sharpshooters choose their targets and pull the triggers.

Water hemlock can grow to heights of three to six feet and usually grow in wet or damp fields or in swamps. They are members of the Parsley family, Umbelliferae, or Carrot family, Apiaceae, depending on the reference consulted; but unlike the parsley and carrots we eat, this relative of the poison hemlock is probably the most poisonous plant in the United States. Water Hemlock - 01a ) At first glance, water hemlock may look like the common Queen Anne's lace, but the water hemlock's flat-topped umbel is separated. The name "cowbane" refers to the fact that this otherwise beautiful plant is just as deadly to cattle as it is to humans. Water Hemlock - 02 ) The most distinguishing feature of the water hemlock is the purple-streaked or spotted stems, hence the Latin name, maculata, which means blotched or spotted. The alternately growing leaves of the water hemlock are pinnate with a terminal and two or three sets of parallel coarsely toothed leaflets.

Extractions: In August, 2000, FES donated some flower essences commonly used with animal issues to Wildkind, the wildlife rehabilitation facility of the Larimer County Humane Society in Fort Collins, Colorado. Established in 1988 to provide care to injured, ill, or orphaned wild animals until they are able to be released back into the wild, Wildkind had already been using homeopathic remedies. Upon receipt of the donation, they were able to add flower essences on a much larger scale than before. Sarah Breuilly, the Wildkind program manager, began submitting cases almost immediately, revealing the effectiveness of flower essences in animal rescue treatments. "Things are going absolutely wonderfully," she reported. "Our Animal Protection and Control Officers have begun using the remedies and are absolutely fascinated with what they are seeing. I have been using the remedies quite liberally and have had some miraculous things occur. Thank you so very much!" Sarah said the essences are now used with all of the animals, and all of the animals receive the Five Flower Formula daily. Other cases are determined by their emotional needs. "We also use the Five Flower Formula as a room freshenerit seems to help eliminate bad smells."
