Photo courtesy of The Northern Echo Back to top of page Timeline of North East History WORLD WAR TWO 1939AD - 1949AD By David Simpson Like the Great War of 1914-18, the Second World War caused a huge loss of life among men of the region who were fighting abroad, and it also placed a great demand on the manufacturing industries back home. Many lives were lost in the North-East, where the gr eat industrial centres of the Tyne, Tees and Wear were a constant victim of the bombing raids of German aircraft. Even non-industrial cities like York were in danger and were targetted specifically because of their rich heritage in the so-called Baedeker raids aimed at demoralising the British nation by the destruction of its history.

Extractions: After the failure of the Glyndwr rebellion, it was inevitable that Wales would be annexed to England. Union had really been achieved by the Statute of Rhuddlan in 1284; that formal recognition had to wait until 1536 was only because of the troubles faced by English kings in dealing with their territories in France and with their own subjects in England. The conclusion of what is known as the Hundred Years War took care of the first problem, and the conclusion of what is known as the Wars of the Roses took care of the other by the time Henry VIII came to the throne in 1509. After his great victory at Agincourt, Henry died on one of his French campaigns in 1422; his widow Katherine then married Owen Tudor, from a prominent Anglesey family. The Wars of the Roses involving rival factions for the throne of England began in the reign of the next king, Henry VI. They continued up to Bosworth in 1485 with the defeat of Richard III at the hands of the grandson of Owen Tudor, the Duke of Richmond, who took the crown as Henry VII.

Extractions: Plantagenet, Yorkist Line Reigned: 1483-1485 Richard III, the eleventh child of Richard, Duke of York, and Cecily Neville, was born in 1452. He was created third Duke of Gloucester at the coronation of his brother, Edward IV. Richard had three children: one each of an illegitimate son and daughter, and one son by his first wife, Anne Neville, widow of Henry IV's son Edward. Richard's reign gained an importance out of proportion to its length. He was the last of the Plantagenet dynasty, which had ruled England since 1154; he was the last English king to die on the battlefield; his death in 1485 is generally accepted between the medieval and modern ages in England; and he is credited with the responsibility for several murders: Henry VI, Henry's son Edward, his brother Clarence, and his nephews Edward and Richard. Richard's power was immense, and upon the death of Edward IV, he positioned himself to seize the throne from the young Edward V. He feared a continuance of internal feuding should Edward V, under the influence of his mother's Woodville relatives, remain on the throne (most of this feared conflict would have undoubtedly come from Richard). The old nobility, also fearful of a strengthened Woodville clan, assembled and declared the succession of Edward V as illegal, due to weak evidence suggesting that Edward IV's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville was bigamous, thereby rendering his sons illegitimate and ineligible as heirs to the crown. Edward V and his younger brother, Richard of York, were imprisoned in the Tower of London, never to again emerge alive. Richard of Gloucester was crowned Richard III on July 6, 1483.
