Extractions: CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) The White House has revealed that members of its energy task force met six times with representatives from Enron Corp., the company that declared bankruptcy last month in the largest filing in U.S. history. Vice President Dick Cheney also met once with the failed corporation's chairman and sat on a panel with him in the months preceding Enron's collapse, the administration said. Cheney's counsel, David Addington, disclosed the meetings in a letter to Rep. Henry Waxman, D-California, who has been pressing the administration to turn over information about its meetings with Enron, accused of overstating its profits. Waxman also wants to know whether the company discussed its "precarious financial position" in any contacts with the White House. "Enron did not communicate information about its financial position in any of the meetings with the vice president or with the National Energy Policy Development Group's support staff," wrote Addington in a letter dated January 3, last Thursday.

Extractions: WASHINGTON (CNN) The White House Wednesday defended President Bush's handling of a stock sale 12 years ago, arguing the reason Bush failed to disclose the sale promptly under federal law was because of a "mix-up" involving the corporation's attorneys, a different explanation from what Bush himself said in the early 1990s. The transaction has resurfaced in the wake of Wall Street scandals involving companies such as WorldCom and Enron, with Bush himself calling for higher ethical standards for corporate leaders and for those leaders to disclose promptly any sale or purchase of their company's stock. At issue is Bush's sale on June 22, 1990 of 66 percent of his holdings, 212,140 shares of Harken at $4 per share, a sale netting Bush nearly $850,000, at a time when Bush served on the company's board of directors.

WASHINGTON (CNN) President Bush announced plans Tuesday for a White House summit next month on missing, exploited and runaway children. "The kidnapping or murder of a child is every parent's worst nightmare," Bush said in a Rose Garden ceremony. The announcement comes in the wake of a rash of abductions and killings of children, including the recent death of 5-year-old Samantha Runnion. "Our nation has come to know the names and faces of too many wonderful children, because they've been the victims of dispicable violence," Bush said. The Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children also plan to take part in the September 24 summit. Extractions: WASHINGTON (CNN) The White House on Sunday played down a Newsweek report that the CIA began tracking two of the September 11 hijackers nearly two years before the attacks, but didn't inform other agencies until last August that at least one of them had entered the United States. A senior administration official urged people "not to rush to judgment based on a single report ... coming to light without context and input from a variety of different parties." The official said the CIA was first alerted to the activities of Nawaf Alhazmi and Khalid Almihdhar during the Clinton administration. On September 11, the men were aboard American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon, killing 189 people. The official added that Bush officials were "going to wait and see" what the House and Senate Intelligence committees find in their joint investigation.
